Our Long-Term Care Interview Experience in Ontario: What We Learned and What Comes Next

 Grandpa Journey

27 April 2026 morning marked an important step in our journey toward planning for the future.

At 10:30 AM sharp, , we welcomed a government long-term care (LTC) service officer into our home. The conversation began right away—structured, professional, yet surprisingly personal.

👨‍👩‍👧 Starting with Our Family Life

The officer first wanted to understand our living situation.

We shared that:

  • Julie and I live together
  • We have one daughter, who visits us once a month with her family
  • These visits are precious—true family gathering time that we deeply enjoy

She also asked whether we receive any outside help.

Our answer was simple and honest:

  • Most household responsibilities are handled by Julie
  • I help with dishwashing
  • Julie is truly the backbone of our home, and I rely on her greatly

That realization—saying it out loud—felt important.

🏡 Why We Are Applying for Long-Term Care

We made our position clear:

We are happy living in our current home and are not in a rush to move.

However:

  • We are willing to wait our turn for long-term care
  • We want to understand what support is available during the waiting period
  • Most importantly, we are preparing for the possibility that
my health condition could decline suddenly, placing pressure on Julie

That, in truth, is the main reason we started this process.

Not crisis—but preparation.

🩺 Health and Personal Assessment

The officer then moved into a general health review, including:

  • Existing conditions (e.g., recent health issues, hypertension, high cholesterol, high blood sug level, teeth conditions, sleep problems, eating difficulties)
  • Vision and hearing status
  • Routine health screenings:
    • Colonoscopy
    • Mammogram
  • Overall medical history

It was not intrusive—but thorough enough to build a clear picture of our situation.

🏠 Choosing Long-Term Care Homes

We also discussed location preferences.

We learned:

  • There are five long-term care homes suitable for Chinese-speaking applicants
  • Selection depends on personal preference and availability

This is an important decision—not just about care, but also language, comfort, and cultural familiarity.

🤝 Support During the Waiting Period

One of the most reassuring outcomes:

👉 Personal care support services will begin next Wednesday

This means we are not alone while waiting.

This kind of interim support can make a real difference:

  • Reducing pressure on caregivers like Julie
  • Providing professional assistance at home
  • Helping maintain stability and dignity

📄 Application Status

Our application has now:

  • ✅ Been accepted
  • ⏳ Is awaiting assessment results
  • 📝 Requires a family doctor’s report to confirm our case

So the process is officially underway.

🧠 Interview Preparation: What Helped Us

Before the meeting, I prepared a list of questions. Looking back, that made a big difference.

Here are some useful questions others may consider:

About Eligibility & Process

  • How is priority determined?
  • What factors affect wait time?

About Waiting Period Support

  • What home care services are available?
  • Can support levels increase if conditions change?

About Emergency Situations

  • What happens if health declines suddenly?
  • Is there a fast-track or crisis pathway?

About LTC Home Selection

  • Which homes have shorter wait times?
  • Are language and cultural preferences considered?

❤️ A Personal Reflection

This experience was not just administrative—it was emotional.

It made us reflect on:

  • Dependence
  • Responsibility
  • The quiet strength of a partner

Julie has been carrying much more than I often acknowledge.

This process is not just about future care—it is about protecting her, too.

Key points in a nutshell

  • Application process step-by-step
  • Waiting time experience
  • Choosing locations
  • Costs and expectations

  • 🌱 Final Thoughts

We are not in a crisis.

    We are preparing.

And that, I believe, is one of the most important decisions we can make at this stage of life.

If you or your loved ones are considering long-term care, my advice is simple:

👉 Start early. Ask questions. Understand your options.

👉👉In my next post, I’ll share how we selected our preferred long-term care homes and what factors mattered most.

    Grandpa Journey
