Last evening, Julie and I attended our monthly dinner with a group of longtime classmates. We have known one another for decades, and every gathering reminds us how precious these friendships have become.
The evening brought mixed emotions.
It was wonderful to sit around the table, enjoy a meal, laugh over old memories, and catch up on each other's lives. Time seemed to slow down as stories flowed from one person to another.
At the same time, we couldn't ignore a simple reality—we are all growing older.
Many of us are recovering from different health challenges. Some have had hip or back surgery. Some now walk with a cane or a rollator. Others are dealing with changes in vision or balance. Our conversations have gradually shifted from careers and raising families to rehabilitation, exercise, medical appointments, and learning how to stay active.
Yet something else stood out even more.
No one was complaining.
Instead, everyone was talking about progress.
One friend was delighted with the success of a hip replacement and was steadily walking again. Another had returned to teaching Tai Chi after recovering from back pain. Someone else continued to run a successful business despite previous surgery. As for me, I shared that I am slowly recovering from my head surgery. My walking has improved, and every small step forward gives me encouragement.
Perhaps that is one of the gifts of growing older.
We stop expecting perfection and begin celebrating progress.
The dinner also reminded us of classmates who are no longer with us. Their absence was quietly felt throughout the evening. It made us appreciate even more the opportunity to gather, share a meal, and simply enjoy each other's company.
One of the highlights of the evening wasn't the food—it was a thoughtful act of kindness. A classmate's wife prepared homemade lemonade and brought a large bottle for everyone to take home. It was a simple gesture, but it filled the room with warmth and generosity.
I also noticed something that deserves recognition.
Many of the spouses quietly helped and supported one another throughout the evening. Whether offering an arm while walking, carrying something, or simply making sure everyone was comfortable, their care spoke louder than words. Growing older is easier when we don't have to do it alone.
As we said our goodbyes after two enjoyable hours together, I realized that these dinners have become about much more than food.
They are about friendship.
They are about gratitude.
They are about encouraging one another to keep moving forward, one step at a time.
We may not walk as quickly as we once did, but we still show up for each other.
And perhaps that is one of the greatest blessings of all.
Growing older is inevitable.
Growing older together—with friendship, kindness, hope, and gratitude—is a choice worth celebrating.
