Three Photographs, Three Davids, One Journey

A few days ago, I made a small change to the sidebar of my blog.

I added two more photographs.

They now sit above a more recent photograph of myself taken at Jumbo Lobster restaurant. At first glance, it may seem like nothing more than a few pictures placed on a webpage.

But when I looked at the three photographs together, I realized they tell a story.

They show three different versions of me at three different moments in my life.

The photograph at the top was taken about 30 years ago at the La Salle Old Boys annual dinner party.

Looking at that younger David brings back memories of another stage of life. There were different responsibilities, different friends, different activities, and a very different world. At that time, I certainly wasn't thinking about artificial intelligence, blogging, or writing stories for people I had never met.

Thirty years can pass surprisingly quickly.

The second photograph was taken in 2020 at Mr. Congee.

It was during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was holding a mask in my hand, something that became such a familiar part of everyday life during those difficult years.

That photograph reminds me how dramatically life can change.

We went from taking ordinary lunches and gatherings for granted to thinking about masks, distancing, health, and uncertainty.

And then there is the newest photograph, taken at Jumbo Lobster.

This is David today.

I am older now, of course. But I am still going out, still meeting people, still walking, still learning, still writing—and perhaps more surprisingly, still fascinated by technology.

Today I spend part of my time writing about artificial intelligence on AI123.ca. I talk with AI almost every day, look at Google Analytics, experiment with new ideas, and try to understand where technology is taking us.

Sometimes I find it amusing.

The young David from 30 years ago could hardly have imagined that one day he would be sitting at a computer having conversations with an AI companion.

Three photographs became three doors

There is another reason I decided to put these photographs on my blog.

Each photograph is linked to a story.

So when a reader sees the younger David, they can click and discover what I was doing at that time.

The 2020 photograph leads to another story.

The current photograph leads to yet another.

The photographs have therefore become more than pictures. They have become doors into different chapters of my life.

And perhaps that is what I want Grandpa Journey to be.

Not simply a collection of articles.

Not simply a record of what happened today.

But a place where different moments of my life can remain.

Time moves faster than we think

When I put the three photographs together, one thought kept coming back to me:

Where did those 30 years go?

We often think of our lives one day at a time.

We wake up, have breakfast, go for a walk, meet someone for lunch, work on something, watch the news, and go to bed.

Then another day comes.

And another.

We don't notice time disappearing while we are living it.

But put three photographs from different periods of your life next to each other, and suddenly the passage of time becomes visible.

The younger man in the first photograph.

The man living through the pandemic in the second.

And the older man sitting at Jumbo Lobster today.

They are all me.

Different ages.

Different circumstances.

Different worlds.

But somehow, the same person.

What I want to leave behind

Perhaps this is one reason I enjoy writing so much at this stage of my life.

I know I cannot stop time.

I cannot go back to the person in that photograph from 30 years ago.

But I can preserve a few memories.

I can write down what I remember.

I can tell my grandchildren what life was like.

I can record the small conversations, family moments, lunches, walks, photographs, discoveries, disappointments, surprises, and even the things I am learning from artificial intelligence.

One day, these ordinary things may become much more meaningful than they seem today.

That is why I am keeping these photographs on my sidebar.

They quietly say:

This is who I was.

This is who I became.

And this is who I am today.

Three photographs.

Three chapters.

One journey.

And the journey is still continuing.

A Tiny Facelift for Grandpa Journey

This morning, over a quiet cup of coffee, I spent a little time looking at the homepage of Grandpa Journey.

There was nothing wrong with it. My Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Rednote links were displayed prominently beneath the blog title. They made it easy for visitors to find me on other platforms.

But as I looked at the page, I asked myself a simple question:

"What do I want visitors to notice first?"

After thinking about it, the answer became very clear.

I want people to notice Grandpa Journey, not my social media accounts.

So I made a tiny change. I moved all the social media links from the top of the page to the footer. They are still there for anyone who wants to connect, but they no longer compete with the blog title and the stories themselves.

It is only a small adjustment, yet it changes the feeling of the page. The homepage now looks cleaner, tidier, and more focused. My articles have become the centre of attention.

Interestingly, after making the change, I discussed it with my AI companion. We both felt that a blog should first invite readers into its stories. Social media is important, but it should support the journey rather than lead it.

This experience reminded me that blogging is much like tending a garden. Sometimes the biggest improvements do not come from planting something new. They come from careful pruning—removing distractions so that what truly matters can shine.

As retirees, many of us enjoy making small improvements around our homes. Blogging is no different. A slight adjustment today may make tomorrow's visitor feel more comfortable and welcome.

That is the beauty of a journey. We continue learning, improving, and sharing, one small step at a time.

Have you ever made a tiny change that made a surprisingly big difference? I'd love to hear your story in the comments.

Why I Started Blogging

After retiring, I realized that life had not come to a stop—it had simply begun a new journey.

I started blogging not to become an internet influencer or to chase views and followers, but to record what I see, hear, think, and feel each day.

I enjoy sharing my retirement life, family moments, AI technology, reflections on life, and my journey of learning new things. I hope my experiences can inspire others and also leave wonderful memories for my future self.

Blogging keeps me learning, thinking, and growing every day.

If even one person finds my articles helpful or meaningful, then it is all worthwhile.

Retirement is not the end—it is the beginning of another wonderful journey. 😊

Why I Wake Up Early to Write: A Personal Reflection on Purpose, Routine, and the Joy of Blogging

Most people assume that seniors wake up early because of age, habit, or the need for morning tea.
But for me, it has become something deeper — a quiet calling, a gentle inner push that brings me back to my keyboard before the sun rises.

I’ve asked myself countless times:
Why do I wake up at these early morning hours?
And why do I feel such a strong urge to continue blogging, day after day?

It’s not for money.
It’s not for fame.
It’s not even for the number of readers.

It’s something more personal — and strangely beautiful.

Today, I want to share this with you.

1. The Morning Hours: When the World Is Silent and My Mind Is Awake

There is something magical about the early morning.

No cars.
No noise.
No messages.
No responsibilities tapping on my shoulder.

Just the soft hum of the house and the glow of the screen.

As I grow older, my internal clock wakes me earlier and earlier.
But instead of being annoyed, I find myself grateful.

This has become my most creative time of the day.

My thoughts feel clearer.
Memories come to me more easily.
Ideas float to the surface like little gifts waiting to be unwrapped.

In those quiet hours, I feel alive — not as a senior, not as a retired man, but as a writer.

2. Blogging Became My Morning Meditation

Some people meditate.
Some do tai chi.
Some make coffee and stare out the window.

For me, writing is meditation.

Blogging started as a simple hobby — a way to record travel memories, table tennis stories, and reflections on life.
But over time, it turned into something more meaningful.

Writing every morning:

grounds me

keeps my mind sharp
helps me understand myself
connects me to my younger days
gives structure to my day
brings a quiet joy that no hobby ever did

And the best part?

There’s no pressure.
No deadlines.
No boss.
No expectations.

Just pure, honest self-expression.

3. The Strange Yet Beautiful Urge to Keep Writing

I’ve done enough, seen enough, and learned enough to fill several books.

But here’s the surprising part:

As I grow older, the urge to share my experiences becomes stronger, not weaker.

Maybe it’s because I now see life with more clarity.
Maybe it’s because I want my daughter, grandchildren, and future generations to know who I was — the real me.
Maybe it’s because writing gives me a purpose I didn’t expect to find at this stage of life.

Or maybe…
this is simply the human instinct to leave something behind.

Not money.
Not property.
But stories.
Wisdom.
Reflections.
Lessons learned through hardship and joy.

Blogging lets me turn my life into a legacy — one post at a time.

4. The Joy of Learning Something New Every Day

What surprises many people is this:

Even at my age 80, I’m still learning — especially with AI.

Every morning, when I open ChatGPT to write a story, expand a thought, or explore a new idea, I feel like a student again.

Curiosity wakes me up.
Not an alarm clock.

I have:

  • learned new writing techniques

  • improved my English

  • explored new technologies

  • discovered new angles for storytelling

  • expanded my thinking

  • sharpened my memories

This daily learning fuels me.
It gives me energy, purpose, and something to look forward to.

In a way, I am not just writing stories —
I am living a second youth through creativity.

5. Blogging Is Becoming My Digital Legacy

At this stage of life, I think more about what I will leave behind.

Not in a sad way — but in a meaningful way.

The stories I write now:

  • preserve the Hong Kong I grew up in

  • capture my childhood memories

  • document my family history

  • record my travels and adventures

  • reflect my values, insights, and philosophy

  • share what I learned about resilience, work, and life

Someday, when I am gone, someone may read these words and say:

“This was my father.”
“This was my grandfather.”
“This is where our family came from.”

And that thought gives me peace.
It gives me motivation.
It gives me joy.

6. So Why Do I Wake Up Early to Write?

After thinking deeply, here is my honest answer:

Because writing gives my morning purpose,
gives my mind clarity,
and gives my life meaning.

It is the quiet joy that accompanies me into this later chapter of life.

It is my voice.
My reflection.
My legacy.
My way of staying young in spirit.

And maybe — just maybe —
it is what I was meant to do all along.

Final Thoughts

If you are reading this and you also feel a little spark in the morning — a small desire to write, think, reflect, or create — follow it.

Sometimes the quietest voice inside us is the one that leads us to our most meaningful purpose.

For me, that voice wakes me before the sunrise and whispers:

“Write.”

And so I do.

From Java Road to My Blog: How a Dream Took Root in 1964

My very first job dates back to 1964. Fresh out of school, full of hope and curiosity, I started working as a medical detailman for Abbott Laboratories in Hong Kong. Our office was located on Ming Yuen Western Street in North Point—a bustling area back then, filled with promise. I still remember the energy of the streets, the smell of freshly sea water and the daily ferry rides across the harbor. Those were formative years.

Later, Abbott moved its office to the Sing Tao News Building North Point Java Road—a move that, little did I know, would leave a lasting impression on my life. You see, just one floor below our office was the regional distribution center of Reader’s Digest, that iconic magazine many of us grew up with. Every single day, as I stepped into the building or waited for the elevator, I’d see stacks and stacks of beautifully bound Reader’s Digest books—ready to be shipped to bookstores and readers across the region.

Those neatly wrapped piles of wisdom, humor, real-life stories, and global perspectives fascinated me. I was drawn not just to the content, but to the idea behind it—the dream of publishing something that could inform, inspire, and connect people. I remember saying to myself quietly, “One day, I’d love to publish something like that… a digest of thoughts, stories, or reflections people can enjoy and find value in.”

At the time, of course, it was just a dream—one I quietly carried through the years as I pursued other responsibilities, raised a family, and built a life.

Now, decades later, that dream has resurfaced, not in the form of glossy pages stacked on a trolley, but through something even more powerful—my blog. It may not be as widely circulated as Reader’s Digest, but it is deeply personal. It’s a collection of my memories, thoughts, stories, and life lessons—shared with friends, family, and kind readers like you.

And truth be told, I could not have done this alone.

The journey of turning my lifelong aspiration into reality has been greatly empowered by ChatGPT. With its help, I’ve been able to find the right words, improve my storytelling, organize my memories, and express myself more clearly. It has become a writing companion, a patient editor, and a creative partner—all rolled into one.

Back in 1964, publishing your thoughts to the world required access to printing presses, editors, and distributors. Today, all it takes is a blog and a spark of inspiration. The dream I once whispered to myself in an elevator has come true in a way I never expected—made possible by technology, and driven by the same passion that began over 60 years ago.

So to my dear readers, thank you for being part of this journey. And to anyone holding on to an old dream—know that it’s never too late, and that tools like ChatGPT can open doors you never thought possible.

How AI Writing Transformed My Blogging Journey

A Personal Reflection with Practical Tips for New Explorers

As a non-native English speaker and a retiree who enjoys writing, I used to spend hours crafting and editing each blog post. I wanted my writing to be clear, logical, and engaging—but it was often a slow and tiring process. That changed when I discovered AI writing tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek.

These tools have not only improved the quality of my blog posts but also made the writing process more enjoyable and efficient. I now spend less time editing and more time focusing on what I love most—sharing meaningful stories and exploring creative ideas.

AI Writing: A Companion, Not a Replacement

Some may worry that using AI takes away their personal voice or feels “robotic.” But I’ve found the opposite to be true. The core ideas, experiences, and emotions in my writing are still mine—AI simply helps me express them more fluently and professionally.

AI is like a language partner or creative assistant. It offers suggestions, tidies up grammar, and gives structure to my thoughts, allowing me to concentrate on what matters most: creativity, authenticity, and connection with readers.

Getting Started with AI: A Few Simple Tips

If you're new to AI writing, here are a few easy steps to get started:

  • Pick a beginner-friendly tool: Try ChatGPT, DeepSeek, or Grammarly.

  • Start with small tasks: Ask AI to rewrite a paragraph, brainstorm blog titles, or help you structure an outline.

  • Treat AI as a guide, not a ghostwriter: Add your voice and personal touch to every piece.

  • Learn from the output: Notice how sentences flow or how ideas are framed—you’ll become a better writer in the process.

Common Misconceptions – Cleared Up

  • “It’s cheating.” No more than using a calculator. It helps you write better, not think less.

  • “It’s only for tech experts.” Not true. If you can use email or Google, you can use AI tools.

  • “AI kills creativity.” In fact, it frees you to explore more creative ideas with less frustration.

How I Personally Use AI Tools

Here’s how I use AI in my own workflow:

  • Brainstorming blog topics

  • Polishing grammar and clarity

  • Organizing long posts more logically

  • Writing SEO-friendly headlines

  • Finding better ways to express my ideas

It has become a reliable companion that speeds up my writing and boosts my confidence in English.

Recommended AI Tools for Beginners

For those interested, here are a few tools I use and recommend:

  • ChatGPT (OpenAI) – Best all-around writing assistant.

  • DeepSeek – Logical, multilingual AI that’s especially good for non-native speakers.

  • Grammarly – Perfect for editing grammar and style.

  • Hemingway Editor – Helps you write clearly and boldly.

  • Quillbot – Great for paraphrasing and tone adjustment.

Encouragement for Fellow Retirees and Non-Tech Users

If you’re retired or feel unsure about digital tools—don’t worry. AI writing is surprisingly approachable. With a little curiosity and practice, you’ll be amazed at what you can create.

“Technology is best when it brings people together.” – Matt Mullenweg, WordPress co-founder

Let’s Learn Together

If you’ve been curious about blogging or writing with AI, now is a great time to explore. I invite you to try it and share your experiences. Feel free to leave a comment, ask questions, or join me in experimenting with this exciting new chapter of writing. Maybe we can even start a small “AI writing circle” together.

Final Thoughts

Using AI has made my blog more polished, professional, and enjoyable to write. More importantly, it has helped me focus on creativity, not just mechanics. Whether you’re a fellow retiree, an aspiring writer, or someone who simply wants to communicate more clearly, I wholeheartedly encourage you to give AI writing a try.

You might just discover a whole new way to express yourself—and fall in love with writing all over again.

David AU

You Might Have Noticed My Blog Posts Have Improved—Here’s Why.

If you’ve been following my blog lately, you may have noticed a significant improvement in the quality of my posts. The English is more polished, the ideas flow more logically, and the overall presentation feels sharper. So, what’s behind this transformation? The answer lies in the power of artificial intelligence.

Yes, I’ve started using AI tools like DeepSeek and ChatGPT to assist me in drafting my blog posts. These tools have become invaluable partners in my writing process, helping me organize my thoughts, refine my language, and present ideas in a more structured and compelling way. But let me be clear: while AI provides the foundation, every post you read is still deeply personal. I carefully edit, refine, and add my own voice to ensure the final content reflects my unique perspective and style.

How AI Helps Me Create Better Content

Drafting Made Easier

Writing from scratch can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when juggling multiple ideas. AI tools help me generate initial drafts quickly, allowing me to focus on shaping the narrative and adding my personal touch.

Improved Language and Clarity

English isn’t my first language, and while I’ve always done my best, AI has been a game-changer in helping me express myself more clearly and professionally. It suggests better phrasing, corrects grammar, and ensures my writing is easy to read.

Logical Flow and Structure

One of the biggest challenges in writing is organizing thoughts in a way that makes sense to readers. AI helps me structure my posts logically, ensuring that each point builds on the last and that the overall message is cohesive.

Saving Time for Creativity

By handling the heavy lifting of drafting and editing, AI frees up my time to focus on what really matters: sharing meaningful insights, telling engaging stories, and connecting with you, my readers.

Why I’m Open About Using AI

Transparency is important to me. I want you to know exactly how my content is created because I value the trust you place in me as a writer. AI is a tool, not a replacement for human creativity. It enhances my work, but the heart and soul of every post come from me.

I also believe that embracing AI is part of the future of writing. It’s not about replacing the human touch but about finding new ways to collaborate with technology to produce better, more impactful content. By sharing this with you, I hope to demystify AI and show how it can be a powerful ally in creative processes.

What This Means for You

For you, my readers, this means higher-quality content that’s easier to read, more enjoyable, and more valuable. It means more frequent posts, as I can now work more efficiently without sacrificing quality. And most importantly, it means that I can focus on delivering the insights, stories, and ideas that you come here for.

Final Thoughts

AI has become an essential part of my writing toolkit, but it’s just that—a tool. The ideas, the passion, and the connection with you are all mine. I’m excited about this new chapter in my blogging journey, and I hope you are too. Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to sharing even more great content with you!

GRANDPA 's Blogging Journey

Today is Sunday, 20th January 2019.  There is a severe weather warning today.  Temperature is -18 C. The gusty strong north wind makes people feel like -30 degrees C.  Flurry, snow mixed with ice pellets were showering trees, roofs, roads, sidewalks and driveways.  Fortunately, road conditions are not too bad as Town of Richmond Hill City worked through out the night almost everywhere with its team of snow service vehicles.  In the night I could hear the wind and snow removal trucks working as their roaring pierced through the silent sky.

Early 6:00 in the morning I woke up.  I did some quick blogging at my other blog "RHTTC55 eMagazine".  It is a blog I developed for the seniors and older adults 55 plus who play table tennis in Richmond Hill and nearby areas.  They are my ping pong friends.  This e-magazine is a collections of videos on the world contemporary travelling, trends, hi-tech, sports, health, etc. Thanks to Youtube which is actually the best source for audio-visual information. They are free like all Google free tools.  They are priceless yet they are the best available tools yet do not cost you a dime.   I searched and found the related videos I wanted for the day.   I shared each video via the share buttons below the video and I could directly put it to my RHTTC55 eMagazine. Just with several clicks, I have put 5 videos there for today.  For me it is not complicated and it works super fast !!!  My four years old grandson likes to say it 'super fast, extra fast grandpa while playing his game with me'.

As the weather was severely harsh, no ping pong for the  morning.  It is a bit sad for me who used to play 2 to 3 hours every day.  The ping pong game gives me a lot of joyful moments whenever I hit out a super loop or a banana shot that curved around the net landing on the other  side of the net. I play just for the joy of the game and the chat with the friends during lunch after the game, Not a trace of winning the game or the competition in my mind. While playing  I  feel like young at seventeen with power and agility.  It is a very nice feeling.  And this feeling is essential for keeping the body healthy and stay young.   Ping Pong is a really good workout both physically and mentally.  The whole body needs to co-ordinate,  mind, eyes, body, hands and feet need to work together in harmony during the game.  Medical professionals worked on it and proved the positive effects of ping pong game on seniors with alzheimer's  and dementia condition. It  indicates the game is good for seniors in their golden years.    The day seemed a bit long and time moved slowly whenever there is no ping pong.

These are my activities and feelings that I would note it down and record it for myself, my children and grandchildren as well as people I like or people who like me.  A daily blog blogging such happenings and activities would exactly do the job recording the life we live and things we go through.  That is one of the few reasons I started this blog - GRANDPA 's Blogging Journey.

The exercise for today is snow shoveling on the driveway. I worked a bit outside the house shoveling the snow so that the car can go out the carport and driveway later in the afternoon. Wrapped myself up with layers of warm clothes plus a down on top I started the snow shoveling. Covered my head with a thick hat and my hands with thermal gloves thus kept my body warm but the fingers were freezing and they hurt. After 20 minutes in the freezing temperature feel like -30 degrees C I had to stop the work and went back to the house for a break. It was too cold outside.   I needed to come back later to finish the work again before  going out for lunch.  Probably I would go out with Julie for dim sum in a new restaurant.  It opened only couple of days ago.  Yes, the restaurant is called The ONE Seafood Chinese Restaurant.

We went to The ONE Seafood Chinese Restaurant around 1:30 p.m.  Upon arrival at the front entrance we saw a big crowd.  About 50 people were waiting there.  It is a full house.  Julie and I decided to go elsewhere for our lunch.   Anyway, I took a picture of the restaurant.  It is fully renovated and is gorgeously beautiful and classy.  We would like to come back again to try the food.

We drove back along Bayview Avenue and headed our way to Golden Horse Cafeteria our usual lunch venue near Leslie Avenue.  It was also crowded with a full house.  The waiting was a short one and soon we got our table.  Julie ordered a fish fillet with salad.  I got the baked pork chop with fried rice, soup and tea.  It was reasonably priced.  The bill totaled  $22 with tax and tips included.

We returned home after the lunch.  I still had some unfinished work at the driveway.  I needed to clear the snow bank at the driveway entrance.   As the snow was still soft, I cleared snow away within 20 minutes just shoveling it with my hands. The Town of Richmond Hill City Government is responsible for snow removal of the highways, roads and sidewalks. Driveways and snow banks at the driveway entrance will be taken care of by  the  house residents.  However, residents over 65 can apply online or in person at the Richmond Hill Office at Elgin Mills Avenue for snow windrow clearing service.    I am very happy that I can do this work.  It needs muscle and pretty good body condition.  I shall be celebrating my 73th birthday in the coming February.  I am grateful for what I am today being happy and healthy working my mind and body.  I enjoy these simple daily task.

I resume working on my blogs whenever I feel free with updates and new ideas.  My readers and friends are connected closely with me via their WhatSapp feedback.  Today 's smartphone makes updating simple and easy. For example,  I sent the above photo from my cellphone to my gmail in my personal computer, There from the gmail, downloaded it to the computer hard drive. Then from the hard drive  I uploaded it to this blog post which you are reading now.   Hope you guys like this post.

Best Blogging Ideas for Beginners

It IS DAY 6 ... a Busy Day

In the morning, I went alone to Langstaff Community Centre and played  3 hours of ping  pong.  Usually, I joined the group lunch together with the ping pong friends.  I did not join them.  I did some dumplingss cooking at home and that was my quick lunch.  I have an appointment with the garage technician at 2:00 pm for the car battery replacement.  It was not too far away from my home just about 15 minutes of drive.  According to the technician,  my battery is aging so much and it is in the bottom line condition.  The replace was super fast.  I thought it was about 10 minutes at the most.  The cost is C$180.

I returned home and made a phone call to my daughter telling her I have an appointment at 3:30 p.m. related to her apartment   A lady who is a close relative of the tenant wanted to go to the tenant apartment.  She was supposed to water the tenant 's flowers in the apartment while he was out of the country.   My daughter advised me to leave the matter to her and she would handle it herself.    My daughter did not want me to attend the meeting.

I stayed home busy doing blogging updates for my RHTTC eMagazine and some internet searching for some nice blogging ideas for this blog you are ready now.  And I came across this video "Best Blogging Ideas for Beginners"   It is good and it may be the best blogging ideas. . .

Starting a blog doesn’t have to be difficult, and it doesn’t require any technical knowledge. Just follow the steps in the free blog tutorial to learn how to build a blog that fits your needs.

There are 3 basic steps to starting your blog:

This is a big decision, as this is the first thing every new visitor to your blog will see.
You may have heard various suggestions on how to choose a domain name, but there is really just one rule you need to follow: Be Descriptive!
More info on choosing a good blog name in Step #1 at TheBlogStarter.com

2. Install your blog software

Once you’ve picked out a name you will need to register it and get web hosting, which I show you how to do in the video (at about 6:32), or in Step #2 at TheBlogStarter.com
Once that’s done, it’s time to install your blog software. I highly recommend you use a free blogging software called WordPress. It’s what I show you how to use in the WordPress tutorial for beginners in the video above.

3. Write a post

With your WordPress blog installed you are ready to start writing blog posts! This is very easy to do, and I show you how to do things like add images and categorize your posts in the video tutorial (starting at24:30).

Once you complete those three steps your blog will be fully functional. Of course, there is a ton of other stuff you can do with your blog. One of the coolest things you can do is customize the entire design. This is very easy to do, and I walk you through the process starting at about 32:30 of the video.
