This morning at 10:30 a.m., a staff member from RNS Health Care Services came to my home for a scheduled assessment and review of the PSW (Personal Support Worker) service I currently receive every Wednesday.
Before the visit, I was not entirely sure what to expect. Like many seniors, I wondered whether it would feel formal, stressful, or intrusive. Fortunately, the experience turned out to be smooth, friendly, professional, and reassuring.
The main purpose of the meeting was to review the home care services already being provided to me and to see whether any adjustments or additional support might be helpful in the future.
At the moment, the services I receive include:
- assistance with shower bathing
- dressing support
- changing bed linens
- supervision during showering
- skin care lotion assistance
During the discussion, I also learned that there are additional services available if needed later on. At this stage, however, my main goal is simple and practical: maintaining good personal hygiene and continuing to live independently and comfortably at home.
The assessment was not just about housekeeping tasks. The staff member also went through a series of general health and wellness questions, including:
- my overall health condition
- current medications
- dizziness or balance issues
- whether I have experienced any falls
- how I have been doing since my surgery
- whether I use any mobility aids such as a walker or cane
- who helps me at home
I found these questions thoughtful and reasonable. They were clearly trying to understand the full picture of daily life and safety at home, not simply checking boxes on a form.
One important thing I realized during the visit is that home care services are not only for people with severe illness. In many cases, they are preventive and supportive. Small amounts of assistance can help seniors maintain dignity, hygiene, safety, and independence for a much longer time.
Another thing that stood out to me was the positive relationship between myself and the PSW staff. I told them honestly that I am very happy with the service being provided. The weekly assistance has been helpful and has made daily routines easier and more comfortable.
The entire review lasted about 30 minutes, and our next assessment meeting is scheduled for November.
Overall, it was a happy and positive experience.
I feel that many seniors — and also their adult children — may feel uncertain or nervous when hearing terms like “home care assessment.” My own experience showed me that the process can actually be caring, respectful, and encouraging.
Growing older does not mean giving up independence. Sometimes, accepting a little support is exactly what helps us maintain independence longer.
For seniors aging at home, that may be one of the most important lessons of all.
