Planning Ahead: My First Call About Long-Term Care Services in Canada

 — A Small Step Today, A Peace of Mind Tomorrow

This morning, I did something important.

Not urgent.
Not dramatic.
But quietly meaningful.

I picked up the phone and called a long-term care service office. 905-895-1240

☎️ Taking the First Step

To be honest, this is something I had been thinking about for a while.

As we grow older, there are questions we cannot avoid forever:

  • What happens if one day we need help?
  • Who do we turn to?
  • What support is available?

These are not easy topics.
Many people prefer not to think about them.

But today, I decided—it’s better to understand early than to worry later.

So I made the call.

🌍 Language Matters More Than We Think

The staff answered in English, and I started asking a few questions.

They were polite and professional.

But after a moment, I realized something important.

For a topic like this—about health, care, and the future—
👉 I wanted to understand everything clearly, without hesitation.

So I asked if someone could speak Cantonese.

They told me they were busy at the moment,
but kindly suggested I leave my phone number for a callback.

🔄 A Quick and Thoughtful Response

To my surprise, within just a few minutes,
the phone rang again.

This time, it was a staff member speaking Cantonese.

That small moment made a big difference.

Suddenly, everything felt:

  • More comfortable
  • More natural
  • More reassuring

We went through a simple questionnaire together—
clear, straightforward, and easy to follow.

No pressure. No confusion.

Just a calm conversation.

🧾 What Happens over the phone conversation

Over the phone the long term care service staff would ask the following:

  • your name and health card number
  • your address
  • your family doctor's name/address
  • your agreement on your own information
  • your spouse's cell phone
  • tools you may need if any
  • any visit to emergency
  • any falling
  • can you take care of yourself
  • how good is your memory
  • take care of your medication

At the end of the call, they explained the next step.

In a couple of weeks,
a service coordinator will contact us for a more detailed discussion.

For now, there is nothing urgent to do—just wait.

And somehow, that feels good.

🌱 A Quiet Sense of Relief

After hanging up, I sat back and reflected.

This was not a big event.
No celebration. No excitement.

But there was a quiet sense of relief.

Because:

  • We have taken the first step
  • We now know where to turn
  • We are no longer “unprepared”

And that peace of mind is valuable.

💡 Why I Am Sharing This

I believe many seniors—and families—face the same situation.

We know planning is important.
But we often delay:

  • “Maybe later…”
  • “Not yet…”
  • “We’ll see…”

Until one day, it becomes urgent.

If there is one thing I learned today, it is this:

👉 Planning ahead is not about fear
👉 It is about confidence and control

🧭 A Gentle Encouragement

If this topic has crossed your mind before,
perhaps today is a good day to take a small step.

You don’t need to solve everything.

Just:

  • Make a call
  • Ask a question
  • Understand what is available

And if language matters to you—
don’t hesitate to ask.

It makes all the difference.

🤝 Looking Ahead

Now, we simply wait for the next call.

When the service coordinator contacts us,
I will continue this journey and share what I learn.

So for now—stay tuned.

Sometimes, the most meaningful steps in life
are also the quietest ones.
