A Bowl of Fish Ball Noodles and a Better Day
Recovery does not always come from hospitals, medications, or staying in bed all day.
Sometimes, recovery comes quietly — through a warm bowl of noodles, a cup of hot coffee, and time spent with family.
For the past few days, I had been dealing with flu symptoms, coughing, mucus, and a chilly feeling that made the body uncomfortable and weak. Yesterday afternoon, I took the first dose of a herbal tea recipe that has worked for me many times over the years. By nighttime, I already noticed some improvement.
Early this morning, Julie boiled the herbal herbs again for a second time. Surprisingly, the tea was still very concentrated from its dark color and strong smell. After drinking it, the improvement became even more noticeable. The chilly feeling gradually disappeared, and the mucus became much looser and easier to clear.
Feeling better than previous days, Julie and I accepted an invitation from our daughter Alison to join her for lunch at a fish ball noodle shop.
Sometimes simple food becomes the best comfort food.
We ordered:
- one bowl of fish ball noodles,
- another bowl with deep fried fish skin,
- Hong Kong-style rice rolls,
- and some siu mei.
The food was satisfying, reasonably priced, and full of familiar Hong Kong flavor. It reminded me again how certain foods can instantly bring back memories and comfort, especially when shared with family.
After lunch, we drove to Markville Mall.
Alison and Julie went walking and shopping while I found my usual relaxing corner with a hot Tim Hortons coffee in hand. Sitting there quietly, watching people pass by, enjoying the warm atmosphere of the mall, I realized something important:
A “better day” does not need to be a big event.
Sometimes it is simply:
- breathing a little easier,
- coughing a little less,
- sharing lunch with family,
- and enjoying a peaceful cup of coffee while life moves gently around you.
As we grow older, we begin to appreciate these ordinary moments much more deeply.
Health recovery is often gradual. But emotionally, family companionship and familiar routines can lift the spirit quickly. Today was one of those days.
Not perfect.
Not exciting.
But warm, peaceful, and quietly joyful.
And sometimes, that is more than enough.
