Our Annual Eye Checkup and Preparing for the Road Ahead
Today, Julie and I skipped our usual mall walking routine for something equally important — our annual eye checkup.
Normally, we enjoy starting the day with a relaxing walk at the mall, followed by a coffee break and some casual browsing. It is a simple routine, but one we both enjoy as part of staying active and healthy.
But today was medical appointment day.
After a thorough examination, our eye doctor gave both of us advice that many people eventually hear as they grow older: it is time to start planning for cataract surgery.
The good news is there is no urgency. Our eyesight is still functional for daily activities, reading, blogging, and getting around. But cataracts develop gradually, and surgery bookings can take many months.
The doctor especially advised me not to wait too long because I will eventually need to do my driving test again at age 82. His recommendation was practical and forward-looking:
“Better to prepare early.”
That sentence stayed in my mind after we left the clinic.
As we age, we slowly realize that good health is no longer something we can simply assume will always be there. Maintaining our vision, mobility, and independence requires planning and attention.
To be honest, hearing the word “surgery” always sounds a little serious, even when cataract surgery is considered one of the safest and most successful procedures today. But many friends who have gone through it told me the same thing afterward:
“I should have done it earlier.”
They talked about brighter colors, clearer night vision, easier reading, and less glare from headlights while driving.
So perhaps this is not really a story about aging negatively. Maybe it is more about adapting wisely to the next stage of life.
Instead of waiting until problems become severe, we prepare ahead while we are still active and independent.
That itself is part of healthy aging.
Today may not have included our usual exercise walk at the mall, but it was still a meaningful day — a reminder that taking care of our eyesight is also taking care of our freedom, confidence, and quality of life in the years ahead.
After all, there are still many roads I hope to drive, many places to visit, many family moments to enjoy, and many stories left to write here on Grandpa Journey.
Growing older is unavoidable.
Preparing wisely for it is a choice.
