A Life Well Lived: Remembering Our Dear Friend George

Today was a day of both sorrow and gratitude.

This morning Julie and I attended the funeral of our longtime friend and La Salle classmate, George R., at Assumption Cemetery. In the evening, we attended Saturday Mass at St. Agnes Tsao K Y Parish Church. It was a day filled with prayer, remembrance, and reflection.

During the visitation, George's parish priest and many friends shared stories about his life. Again and again, one picture emerged. George was a simple man, gentle in nature, friendly to everyone he met, and never one to seek attention. He quietly touched the lives of many people.

George's life journey was remarkable in its simplicity.

He studied at La Salle College, continued to the University of Hong Kong, and graduated with honours. He became a teacher at Maryknoll Father's  School, helping young people grow through education. After immigrating to Canada, he continued his pursue at University of Toronto where he graduated with Master of Library Science degree. He worked as a librarian, organizing books and making knowledge accessible to the community.

As I listened to the stories, one thought stayed with me.

George spent his entire life sharing knowledge.

First, he learned.

Then, he taught.

Finally, he cared for books so that countless others could continue learning.

His career was never about fame or wealth. It was about helping people discover ideas, develop themselves, and become better informed. Looking back, it seems that sharing knowledge was the quiet mission of his life.

Friends and students travelled from Hong Kong, Ottawa, different parts of Canada, and the United States to say their final goodbye. Their presence spoke more loudly than words. It reflected how deeply George was loved and respected.

As we grow older, we attend more funerals than weddings. Each farewell reminds us that life is precious and friendships should never be taken for granted. The monthly dim sum gatherings with our La Salle classmates, the birthday dinners, the laughter, and the conversations now carry even greater meaning. They are memories we continue to treasure.

Today we grieve the loss of a very good friend.

But we also celebrate a life well lived—a life marked by humility, kindness, friendship, and a lifelong commitment to sharing knowledge.

May George Rest in Peace.

Thank you, George, for walking part of life's journey with us. You will always be remembered.

George R

George

George

他先努力學習;

然後成為老師,教育下一代;

My New Walking Companion: The HOKA Clifton 10

Last weekend, I treated myself to a new pair of walking shoes—the HOKA Clifton 10.

At first glance, buying a pair of shoes may not seem like a big event. But as we grow older, we begin to appreciate how important comfort, mobility, and health are to our daily lives. A good pair of walking shoes is no longer just footwear; it becomes a trusted companion on our journeys.

The search began after I noticed that my old shoes were showing signs of wear. Recently, I had walked nearly 7,000 steps in a day while picking up my repaired RAV4. That evening, my calves felt stiff and sore. It reminded me that comfortable and supportive footwear matters more than ever.

After doing some research and reading reviews, I became interested in HOKA shoes. Two models caught my attention: the Clifton 10 and the Bondi 9. Both are popular among walkers and runners, known for their cushioning and comfort.

On Father's Day weekend, after enjoying lunch with Alison and family, we visited Hillcrest Mall. I took the opportunity to try both models.

The Bondi 9 felt soft and highly cushioned. It was comfortable, but for me it seemed a little bulky. Then I tried the Clifton 10.

The difference was immediate.

The Clifton felt more balanced and natural. It offered excellent cushioning while maintaining a stable connection to the ground. I also felt that the road grip was better, giving me more confidence while walking. Most importantly, it simply felt right on my feet.

There was another pleasant surprise. The Clifton 10 was on sale with a 20% discount, and the store was running a gift card promotion as well. Good comfort combined with good value made the decision much easier.

So I happily became the owner of a new pair of HOKA Clifton 10 walking shoes.

What brought me the greatest satisfaction was not the purchase itself. It was the process of comparing options, listening to my body, and making a thoughtful choice. Sometimes happiness comes from simple things—a comfortable pair of shoes, a relaxing cup of tea afterward, and the anticipation of future walks.

This morning, as I prepare for another day of ping pong, community activities, and lunch with friends, I look forward to putting my new walking companion to work.

Life's journey continues, one step at a time.

And now, those steps may be a little more comfortable.

HOKA Clifton 10

What Really Caused the CV Joint Damage?

Follow-up to "A Rainy Day and an Unexpected Car Repair"

The day after picking up my Toyota RAV4 from the garage, I found myself thinking about what might have caused the CV joint and axle damage that led to the repair.

The repair bill came to about C$1,000, including tax, and involved replacing the CV joints, shafts, and axles on both sides of the vehicle. Thankfully, the problem was discovered before it became a more serious breakdown, and the work was covered by a one-year warranty.

As I sat at home that evening listening to the rain outside, I began reflecting on the possible causes.

Was it the potholes?

Like many drivers in Ontario, I have driven over my share of potholes. Some are small and unavoidable, while others seem to appear overnight after a long winter. Even when we try to avoid them, a sudden bump can place stress on the suspension, steering components, and drive axles.

Was it the railway crossings?

I also thought about the many times I crossed railway tracks. Perhaps I did not slow down enough on some occasions. A sharp impact from uneven rails can send a shock through the vehicle, especially as it ages. Although a single crossing may not cause damage, repeated impacts over the years can gradually take their toll.

Or was it the accident a few months ago?

A few months back, another vehicle collided with my RAV4. The accident damaged the front bumper, one headlight, and left scratches along the right front door. The visible damage was repaired, and the vehicle seemed to drive normally afterward.

Still, I cannot help wondering whether the impact may have contributed to hidden stress on some of the front-end components. It is difficult to know for certain. Modern vehicles are complex machines, and damage does not always show up immediately.

The truth is that I may never know the exact cause.

Perhaps it was one major event.

Perhaps it was years of normal wear and tear.

Or perhaps it was a combination of potholes, railway crossings, the accident, and simply the passage of time.

What this experience reminded me is that every vehicle has a story. Every kilometre travelled leaves its mark. Just as our bodies change as we grow older, so do our cars.

The important thing is not to dwell on what caused the problem but to deal with it when it appears.

I am grateful that I noticed the grease leaking onto the garage floor. I am grateful that the mechanic identified the problem quickly. Most of all, I am grateful that the repair was completed before a roadside breakdown occurred.

Life often teaches us the same lesson.

We cannot always determine exactly why problems arise. Sometimes we simply have to recognize them, address them, and move forward.

Today the RAV4 is back on the road, and so am I.

And that, perhaps, is what matters most.

《Grandpa Journey》

也许是一次严重冲击;

也许是多年正常磨损的累积;

A Rainy Day and an Unexpected Car Repair

This morning, the weather forecast called for rain throughout the day. Instead of heading out for my usual activities, Julie and I had a different mission: bringing my Toyota RAV4 to the maintenance garage.

A few days ago, I noticed an oily patch on the garage floor near the right front wheel. At first, I was concerned. Was it engine oil? Brake fluid? Transmission fluid? After speaking with my garage technician, he suggested it was most likely grease from the right front CV joint.

Like many drivers, I had heard of a CV joint before but never paid much attention to it. I learned that the CV (Constant Velocity) joint helps transfer power from the engine to the wheels while allowing the suspension and steering to move freely. It is protected by a rubber boot filled with grease. If the boot cracks or tears, grease can leak out, dirt can get in, and the joint may eventually wear out.

Today we dropped the vehicle off at the garage for a thorough inspection. Since the repair could take several hours, we decided to leave the car there and return home. Depending on what the mechanic finds, the repair may involve replacing the damaged boot or possibly the entire CV joint.

While unexpected repairs are never welcome, I view this as part of responsible vehicle ownership. A small problem discovered early is often much cheaper and safer to fix than a major breakdown later.

As seniors, many of us depend heavily on our vehicles for shopping, medical appointments, visiting family, and enjoying retirement activities. Regular maintenance and paying attention to unusual signs—such as noises, vibrations, or fluid leaks—can help prevent bigger problems down the road.

For now, all I can do is wait for the garage's diagnosis and hope the repair is straightforward.

Sometimes life reminds us that even reliable companions like a Toyota RAV4 need a little care and attention.

Have you ever discovered a small car problem that turned out to be something more serious—or perhaps something less serious than you expected? Feel free to share your experience in the comments.

My First Experience Setting Up a Portable Karaoke Machine

Recently, I added a new toy to my collection — a portable karaoke machine with two wireless microphones. It looked simple at first, but I quickly realized that getting everything set up properly is a small learning journey of its own.

What started as a fun purchase turned into an interesting hands-on experience about Bluetooth connections, sound quality, and finding the right balance between simplicity and performance.

📱 First Step: Connecting with My Phone

The easiest and most natural choice was to connect the karaoke machine to my cellphone via Bluetooth. Within a few minutes, I had music playing through the speaker.

It worked smoothly, and I could start singing right away using YouTube karaoke tracks.

However, I began to wonder:

  • Would the sound be better on a laptop?
  • Is there a difference in audio quality?
  • Am I missing a better setup?

That curiosity led me to try a few different options.

💻 Trying the Laptop Connection

Next, I connected the karaoke machine to my laptop via Bluetooth.

The setup worked just like the phone — simple and straightforward. I tested music playback and compared the sound.

To my surprise, the difference was not very big. Both phone and laptop produced similar sound quality through Bluetooth. The convenience factor, however, was clearly in favor of the phone.

This made me realize something important: for everyday karaoke use, Bluetooth is more about convenience than perfect audio fidelity.

🔌 The Hidden Winner: Wired Connection

I later learned that the real improvement in sound quality comes from using an AUX cable instead of Bluetooth.

A wired connection delivers:

  • clearer sound
  • more stable audio
  • no delay between voice and music

But for now, I decided not to go in that direction. I preferred to keep things simple and flexible.

🎚️ Discovering the Real Secret: Mic and Echo Settings

What made the biggest difference in the overall karaoke experience was not the device connection — it was the sound balance.

After some trial and adjustment, I found that three settings matter most:

  • 🎵 Music volume: around 60–70%
  • 🎤 Microphone volume: around 50–60%
  • 🌫️ Echo: around 30–40%

Too much echo made the voice unclear. Too little made it sound flat. The right balance created a pleasant “stage-like” feeling without distortion.

This was the real “aha” moment for me.

🎯 What I Decided in the End

After testing both phone and laptop, I made a simple decision:

I will continue using my cellphone connection for now.

Why?

  • It is the most convenient
  • Setup is quick
  • Sound difference is minimal for my needs
  • I can focus more on singing, less on technical adjustments

Sometimes, simplicity is the best choice.

🎤 Final Thoughts

This small experiment reminded me of something important: technology should serve enjoyment, not complicate it.

I didn’t need the perfect setup — I just needed a setup that lets me enjoy singing without frustration.

For now, my karaoke journey continues with my phone, my wireless mic, and a simple smile.

And that’s more than enough.

A Proud Grandpa’s Journey: Celebrating Ayden’s 4×100 Relay Victory

There are moments in a grandparent’s life that fill the heart with immense pride, and this week brought one of those special moments for Grandma and me. 🏆😊

Our grandson, Ayden, recently competed in an inter-school athletics competition and helped his school win the trophy in the 4×100-meter relay race. Competing against students from six different schools, Ayden and his teammates demonstrated outstanding teamwork, determination, and athletic ability to achieve this wonderful victory.

As grandparents, we know that success in sports is about much more than crossing the finish line first. It is about the hours of practice, the discipline to keep improving, the willingness to work together as a team, and the courage to give your best effort when it matters most. Ayden’s achievement reflects all of these qualities.

Watching young people grow and develop their talents is one of the greatest joys of being a grandparent. Every accomplishment, whether big or small, represents a step forward in their journey. Ayden’s relay victory is a reminder that hard work and perseverance truly do pay off.

We are incredibly proud of him, not only for winning the trophy but also for the character he displayed along the way. Team sports teach valuable life lessons—cooperation, trust, commitment, and resilience. These lessons will serve him well both on the track and in life.

Our message to Ayden is simple: keep up the good work. Continue striving for excellence in both sports and academics. Enjoy the process of learning, growing, and challenging yourself. Remember that success comes from consistent effort, maintaining a positive attitude, and never giving up when faced with obstacles.

Grandma and I will always be cheering from the sidelines, celebrating every milestone and encouraging every new adventure. We look forward to hearing about many more achievements in the years ahead.

Congratulations once again, Ayden. Your victory has brought great joy to our family, and we are very proud of you.

With love,

Grandpa and Grandma

The Kitchen Was Packed, and Our Hearts Were Full

Sam

Today our daughter's family came over and decided to make lunch for us. It was Ayden's first attempt at cooking noodles. Sam stood beside him, patiently showing him each step, while Hailey joined the action. Soon our kitchen was packed with activity, laughter, and the sounds of cooking.

Sam's Kitchen Lesson

As lunch was being prepared, Sam was not just cooking—he was also teaching. Step by step, he guided Ayden and Hailey through the process, turning a simple meal into a valuable learning experience.

  • 🥬 He showed them how to wash the bok choy carefully, making sure each leaf was clean and free of dirt.
  • 💧 He explained how to bring water to a boil and when to add the vegetables for cooking.
  • 🥫 He taught them how to safely open a can of Spam.
  • 🔪 He demonstrated how to slice the Spam into thin, even pieces.
  • 🍳 He showed them how to crack eggs carefully without getting shells into the pan.
  • 🍳 He guided them on how to cook sunny-side-up eggs and control the heat properly.
  • 🍜 Together, they prepared the noodles and combined them with the bok choy, Spam, and eggs.
  • 🍽️ Finally, Ayden and Hailey helped carry the finished dishes to the dining table and proudly served lunch to Grandma and Grandpa.

For Julie and me, this was much more than a meal. It was a chance to watch our grandchildren learn practical life skills, work together as a team, and gain confidence through hands-on experience.

We were also touched to see Sam patiently passing on his knowledge to the next generation. Moments like these remind us that some of life's most valuable lessons are taught not in a classroom, but in a family kitchen.

The menu was simple: soup noodles with stir-fried Spam slices, sunny-side-up eggs, and fresh bok choy. Nothing fancy, but everything tasted wonderful because it was made with care.

For Julie and me, the greatest joy was not the food itself. It was watching our grandchildren learn, helping one another, and spending time together as a family.

When lunch was over, I told them they were welcome to come back and cook for us anytime. They smiled and promised to visit again during the summer vacation.

The noodles were good. The family time was even better.

Sometimes the happiest moments in retirement are not found in grand events, but in a busy kitchen filled with people we love.

From Good Morning Messages to Artificial Intelligence: How WhatsApp Is Changing for Seniors

For many seniors, WhatsApp began as a simple communication tool.

A family member installed it on our phones and showed us how to send messages, share photos, and make calls. Soon, our mornings became filled with cheerful greetings, inspirational quotes, flowers, sunrises, and the occasional joke from friends and relatives.

The familiar "Good Morning" message became a daily ritual.

But something interesting is happening.

WhatsApp is quietly evolving into much more than a messaging app.

Today, it is becoming a platform that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI), helping users find information, create content, communicate more effectively, and stay connected in new ways.

Many seniors may not even realize that they are already witnessing the early stages of AI integration into one of the apps they use every day.

The Evolution of WhatsApp

When WhatsApp first became popular, its main functions were straightforward:

  • Text messaging

  • Photo sharing

  • Voice messages

  • Voice calls

  • Video calls

  • Group chats

These features alone transformed how families communicated across cities, countries, and continents.

Grandparents could see grandchildren through video calls. Friends could organize gatherings without making dozens of phone calls. Travel groups could share photos instantly.

For many retirees, WhatsApp became an essential part of daily life.

Now, a new chapter is beginning.

Enter Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is gradually being integrated into WhatsApp through features such as Meta AI and other AI-powered tools.

Instead of opening a search engine, users can ask questions directly within the app.

For example:

  • What is an ETF?

  • How do I cook salmon?

  • Translate this message into Chinese.

  • Explain inflation in simple terms.

  • Suggest ideas for a family reunion.

In many cases, AI can provide immediate answers without leaving the conversation.

This represents a significant shift.

WhatsApp is moving from being a communication platform to becoming an information and assistance platform.

AI as a Learning Companion

One of the most promising aspects of AI for seniors is lifelong learning.

Retirement does not mean the end of learning. In fact, many retirees finally have time to explore subjects they never had time for during their working years.

AI can help answer questions about:

  • Technology

  • Travel

  • Health and wellness

  • History

  • Languages

  • Personal finance

  • Hobbies

Instead of feeling intimidated by complex topics, seniors can ask questions in plain language and receive explanations tailored to their level of understanding.

Curiosity no longer requires technical expertise.

Breaking Language Barriers

Many seniors maintain relationships with friends and family around the world.

Language differences can sometimes create challenges.

AI-powered translation tools are helping bridge these gaps.

Whether communicating in English, Chinese, French, Spanish, or many other languages, AI can assist with:

  • Translation

  • Grammar correction

  • Writing assistance

  • Language learning

This creates new opportunities for meaningful communication across cultures and generations.

Practical Uses for Everyday Life

The combination of WhatsApp and AI can support daily activities in surprising ways.

Imagine asking AI to:

  • Draft a birthday greeting

  • Summarize a long conversation

  • Suggest travel destinations

  • Explain a medical term

  • Generate ideas for a community event

  • Help write a blog post

These tasks, which once required multiple apps or websites, may eventually be handled within a single platform.

For seniors, convenience matters.

The simpler technology becomes, the more useful it becomes.

The Human Side Still Matters

While AI offers exciting possibilities, it is important to remember that technology is a tool, not a replacement for human relationships.

A video call with grandchildren is still more meaningful than an AI-generated image.

A lunch with old classmates is still more enjoyable than a virtual conversation.

A friendly chat after a ping pong game remains one of life's simple pleasures.

AI can help us communicate and learn, but it cannot replace genuine friendship, family bonds, and shared experiences.

Looking Ahead

The future of technology will likely bring even more AI features into everyday applications.

For younger generations, this may seem ordinary.

For seniors, it is a remarkable transformation.

Many of us grew up with rotary telephones, handwritten letters, and printed encyclopedias. We have witnessed the arrival of personal computers, the internet, smartphones, and now artificial intelligence.

What once seemed like science fiction is becoming part of daily life.

The journey from sending "Good Morning" messages to chatting with AI assistants inside WhatsApp illustrates how quickly technology continues to evolve.

The encouraging news is that seniors do not need to become technology experts.

All we need is a willingness to stay curious, keep learning, and remain open to new possibilities.

After all, learning has no age limit.

And perhaps the next exciting discovery is only one message away.

  • ETF(交易所買賣基金)是什麼?

Rouge Woods

A Morning at Rouge Woods: Ping Pong, Simple Meals, and Big Conversations About EVs

June 2 morning started the way many good days often do—simple, unplanned, and quietly satisfying.

Julie and I went to Rouge Woods for our usual ping pong session. But before that, we stopped at Golden Horse Café for breakfast. Nothing fancy, just honest food that does the job: a bowl of satay beef rice noodles and a tuna sandwich. Warm, filling, and enough fuel for whatever the morning would bring.

A Gentle Game, Not a Hard Battle

The ping pong session lasted about 40 minutes.

Not a long session, but enough to feel the rhythm of the game again.

Today was interesting because my body felt a bit different. The energy level was slightly better than usual, and I felt lighter overall. But at the same time, my legs were still not strong enough for fast movements.

So I didn’t push too hard.

Instead, I played it smart—kept things simple, focused on control, and tried to keep the ball on the table rather than chasing difficult shots.

It wasn’t about winning or intensity. It was about staying in the game and enjoying the movement.

And that, in its own way, is still a good session.

Conversations Between Rallies

What made the morning even more enjoyable was the conversation between games.

We ended up talking about electric vehicles—especially BYD and Tesla. That topic seems to be everywhere these days.

The prices, the features, the design improvements—it was all quite exciting. Not long ago, EVs felt like a niche topic. Now they are becoming part of everyday conversation, even in a ping pong hall.

There was a shared feeling that the market is changing quickly, and competition is heating up. When new players like BYD enter more strongly into places like Canada, it naturally sparks curiosity. People compare, question, and look forward to what comes next.

It’s interesting how a casual sports morning can turn into a discussion about global technology trends.

A Simple Kind of Morning

Looking back, nothing extraordinary happened today.

No big event. No major achievement.

Just breakfast, a bit of ping pong, friendly conversation, and thoughts about the future of cars.

But sometimes, that is exactly what makes a day meaningful.

A light body.
A slower pace.
A shared game.
A good conversation.

Life doesn’t always need to be loud to feel full.

And somehow, on mornings like this, everything feels connected—the food we eat, the games we play, and even the technologies we talk about.

All of it becomes part of the same journey.

A simple morning at Rouge Woods, but still a very good one.

(Scroll down to see the English version)

Life Is So Fragile — Reflections After Hearing Sad News

Yesterday evening, we received very sad news from our church community.

Two seniors in the Unionville–Markham area lost their lives in a fire. One of them was a long-time friend in our parish. This news deeply affected many of us, especially those who knew them personally.

For Julie and me, it was especially emotional. Not long ago, Julie also lost a friend in a water-related accident. Now, another loss has come through fire.

When these events happen close together, it brings a very quiet but powerful realization:

Life is fragile.

We often go through our daily routines—walking at the mall, meeting friends, sharing meals, attending church—feeling that life is stable and predictable. But moments like this remind us that everything can change suddenly, without warning.

The Reality We Do Not Always Think About

We usually try not to dwell on sadness. That is natural. Life must continue.

But when someone we know passes away unexpectedly, especially within our own community, it becomes more personal. It is no longer just “news.” It becomes a reminder of faces we have seen, conversations we have had, and shared moments that can never be repeated.

What Remains With Us

In times like this, I find myself thinking less about the events themselves, and more about what remains.

What remains are memories.
What remains are friendships.
What remains is the kindness we shared when we were together.

These are the things that quietly stay with us.

A Gentle Reminder

Perhaps the most important lesson is not fear, but awareness.

To appreciate the people around us.
To take time for simple conversations.
To not delay kindness or connection.
To value the present moment more deeply.

We cannot control life’s uncertainty. But we can choose how we live each day within it.

Closing Thought

As I write this, I realize again how important community is—friends at church, walking companions, family, and those we meet in everyday life.

In the end, life is not measured only by its length, but by the connections we build along the way.

May those we lost rest in peace, and may we continue to cherish the time we have with one another.

Julie

From Lifting Patio Stones to Lifting Ideas

A few days ago, Sam and Alison kindly arranged to have our patio problem fixed.

Over time, some of the patio stones had shifted and become uneven. With the rainy season approaching, water drainage was becoming a concern. Thanks to their prompt action, the patio stones are now properly aligned with a gentle slope that directs rainwater away from the house. Julie and I feel much safer and are truly grateful for their help.

As I looked at the newly repaired patio, my mind drifted back about ten years.

At that time, I was the one doing much of the gardening and landscaping work around our home. I remember buying patio stones from Home Depot and loading them into my Isuzu 4x4 SUV. After driving home, I unloaded them one by one and carried them to the backyard and side yard. Each stone was heavy, but I worked patiently, taking my time and completing the project piece by piece.

Back then, it was simply another home improvement job.

Today, it feels like a different chapter of life.

The truth is that I can no longer lift a patio stone. Even trimming shrubs or pruning small trees requires more effort than before. As we age, our bodies send us clear messages. The strength, stamina, and recovery time we once took for granted gradually change.

At first, it is easy to focus on what we can no longer do.

But I have learned that aging is not only about giving things up. It is also about choosing wisely.

Instead of fighting against reality, I try to select activities that match my current energy and abilities. There are still many things I can do and enjoy.

Blogging is one of them.

Learning new things is another.

Whether it is exploring artificial intelligence, improving my writing, learning about technology, reading about world events, or simply sharing life stories with friends and readers, these activities keep my mind active and curious.

In a way, I have traded lifting patio stones for lifting ideas.

The work is different, but the satisfaction is surprisingly similar.

A completed patio once gave me a sense of accomplishment. Today, a finished blog post gives me that same feeling. A successful gardening project once brightened my backyard. Now, learning something new brightens my day.

Growing older does not mean the journey is over.

It simply means the journey changes direction.

And as long as we continue to learn, share, and stay curious, there are still many rewarding paths ahead.

For that, I am thankful.

Meta Description:

A simple patio repair reminds me of how aging changes what we can do physically, while opening new opportunities to stay active through learning, blogging, and lifelong curiosity.

A Ping Pong Gathering Filled with Friendship and Good Food

Yesterday was another wonderful day with our ping pong friends.

Some of us came directly from the Rouge Woods community centre after playing ping pong, while others had spent the morning hiking around the Oak Ridges area. By noon, everyone gathered at MizhiHua Cafeteria near Stouffville Road and Yonge Street, where a table for twelve had already been reserved.

As seniors, we often say that exercise keeps us healthy, but friendship keeps us happy. Yesterday's gathering had plenty of both.

The food arrived one dish after another.

We ordered five "wo chai" (house specialty dishes) and added several favorites, including:

  • Fresh boiled shrimp
  • Hainan-style chicken with ginger sauce
  • Stir-fried beef with onions
  • Deep-fried Maggie Kwaifei fish
  • Stir-fried beef with rice noodles
  • Sweet and sour pork
  • Garlic green beans
  • Stir fried Salted fish minced chicken with rice

The portions were enormous. Every dish that arrived looked like it was meant for a banquet rather than a simple lunch gathering.

What impressed us most was not only the quantity but also the quality. The shrimp were fresh, the chicken was tender, the fish was crispy on the outside and moist inside, and the stir-fried beef carried that wonderful wok aroma that only experienced chefs can create.

Of course, as with most gatherings among old friends, the food was only part of the attraction.

The real highlight was the conversation.

Around the table were friends from different backgrounds and walks of life. Some were discussing recent hiking adventures. Others talked about family, grandchildren, travel plans, and, naturally, ping pong. There was plenty of laughter, good-natured teasing, and storytelling.

As I looked around the table, I was reminded that retirement is not simply about having more free time. It is about having the opportunity to enjoy meaningful moments with people who have become part of our daily lives.

Many of us first met through ping pong. Over time, however, the friendship grew beyond the game. We now celebrate birthdays together, share meals, go hiking, exchange messages in WhatsApp groups, and look out for one another.

The food yesterday was excellent.

The company was even better.

By the end of lunch, everyone left with a full stomach and a happy heart.

Sometimes the greatest pleasures in life are not expensive vacations or grand events. They are simple afternoons spent sharing good food, good stories, and good friendship around a round table.

And yesterday was one of those afternoons.
