At 90, Still Driving Forward — A Coffee Chat with Tom

A Regular Morning, An Extraordinary Story

Some mornings begin like any other.

A cup of coffee at McDonald's.
A few familiar faces.
Simple conversation.

But on this particular day, something special happened.

Our old friend Tom, now 90 years old,  with a quiet smile—and big news.

He had just returned from his senior driving test with success.

Not Just a Test — A Statement

At 90, passing a driving test is not just about driving.

It’s about:

  • Independence
  • Confidence
  • Staying mentally sharp
  • Continuing to live life on your own terms

Tom didn’t make a big show of it. That’s his style—gentle, friendly, and humble.

But among our coffee group, we all knew:
👉 This was something worth celebrating.

A Simple Celebration

Tom invited us to join him for a small celebration.

Just a simple meal. Nothing fancy.

That’s the beauty of it.

At our age, it’s not about big parties.
It’s about sharing meaningful moments with people who understand the journey.

Although my wife Julie and I already had a prior commitment with our ping pong friends, we were truly happy for him—and will celebrate with him another time.

A Life Across Cultures

Tom’s story goes back much further.

He came to Canada as a young boy from China.
Over the years, he built a life here—quietly, steadily.

Today, he speaks both:

  • Fluent English
  • Fluent Cantonese

And even now, during our coffee chats, you’ll often see him:
✍️ Practising writing Chinese characters on paper

That habit says a lot.

It’s not about necessity anymore.
It’s about keeping the mind active and staying connected to his roots.

What Makes Tom Special

It’s not just the driving test.

It’s who he is:

  • Gentle in conversation
  • Friendly with everyone
  • Disciplined in small daily habits
  • Always learning, even at 90

No big speeches. No attention-seeking.

Just quiet consistency.

Why This Matters (More Than We Think)

We often talk about aging as if it’s a limitation.

But people like Tom show us something different:

👉 Aging can still mean growth
👉 Aging can still mean independence
👉 Aging can still mean learning

He is not trying to “prove” anything.

He is simply living well.

And that, in itself, is powerful.

A Personal Reflection

I left that morning feeling inspired.

Not only by Tom—but by many friends around me.

In our daily coffee chats, in our ping pong games, in our simple routines—
there are lessons everywhere.

We just need to notice them.

Final Thought

At 90, Tom is still moving forward—literally and figuratively.

Maybe the lesson is simple:

👉 Keep going
👉 Keep learning
👉 Keep showing up

Age is just a number.

But attitude—that’s everything.

Tom

Tom

Tom

Tom

Canadian Senior Drivers BE READY! Major Driving License Updates

Aging Wisely: Rethinking Health Norms After 75

As we journey through life and reach our late 70s, 80s, and even 90s, it's only natural to reflect on how our bodies change—and how our health needs evolve. Many of us grew up hearing that "normal" blood pressure is 120/80, that bone strength must match that of a 30-year-old, or that regular cancer screenings are essential. But should we still be using the same health standards designed for young adults? The short answer is: not always. In fact, applying young adult norms to older adults can sometimes lead to unnecessary worry—or even harm. Let’s explore how aging changes our bodies and what that means for how we monitor our health. 🩺 Blood Pressure: A Little Higher May Be Healthier You've likely been told that 120/80 mmHg is the ideal blood pressure. But as we age, our arteries naturally stiffen. A systolic pressure between 130–140 may actually be safe and acceptable in older adults, especially if you feel well. Overly aggressive efforts to push blood pressur...
