A Simple Life-Saving Tip I Learned at the Mall

Today at Markville Mall, I received a piece of advice that stayed with me.

A senior friend, over 80 years old, shared something very practical learned from a paramedic. He and his wife have prepared an envelope containing their personal medical information and health card details. They keep it attached to the side of their refrigerator at home.

In addition, they each carry a small piece of medical information with them at all times when going out.

He told me, “In case something unexpected happens, this can help others help you.”

I paused for a moment and realized how important — and how easy — this is.

In an emergency, we may not be able to speak clearly or explain our situation. Having essential information ready can save valuable time and guide first responders or kind strangers to take the right action.

Here is what we can prepare:

At Home (Fridge Envelope):

  • Full name and date of birth
  • Health card number
  • Emergency contact person (name and phone)
  • Existing medical conditions
  • Current medications
  • Allergies

Place this information in a clearly labeled envelope and attach it to the side of your refrigerator. This is often the first place emergency personnel will check.

When Going Out (Carry-On Card):

  • Name
  • Emergency contact number
  • Key medical conditions (if any)
  • Allergies

Keep it simple and easy to read. You can place it in your wallet.

This small preparation takes only a few minutes, but it can make a big difference in a critical moment.

I am grateful to my friends for sharing this thoughtful advice. It is a reminder that wisdom gathered over the years is something we can all learn from.

Let us take a little time today to prepare — not out of fear, but out of care for ourselves and our loved ones.

Canadian Senior Drivers BE READY! Major Driving License Updates

Aging Wisely: Rethinking Health Norms After 75

As we journey through life and reach our late 70s, 80s, and even 90s, it's only natural to reflect on how our bodies change—and how our health needs evolve. Many of us grew up hearing that "normal" blood pressure is 120/80, that bone strength must match that of a 30-year-old, or that regular cancer screenings are essential. But should we still be using the same health standards designed for young adults? The short answer is: not always. In fact, applying young adult norms to older adults can sometimes lead to unnecessary worry—or even harm. Let’s explore how aging changes our bodies and what that means for how we monitor our health. 🩺 Blood Pressure: A Little Higher May Be Healthier You've likely been told that 120/80 mmHg is the ideal blood pressure. But as we age, our arteries naturally stiffen. A systolic pressure between 130–140 may actually be safe and acceptable in older adults, especially if you feel well. Overly aggressive efforts to push blood pressur...
