This morning turned out to be more meaningful than I expected.
Around 9:30 am, a friend of Julie’s came over to our home. She is a senior, eager to learn, but like many others, a little hesitant when it comes to technology. Her main concern was her mobile phone—too many ads, constant alerts, even “virus warnings” popping up when watching YouTube. On top of that, there were unwanted apps installed, making the whole experience confusing and frustrating.
We sat down together and went through her phone step by step.
We removed suspicious apps, adjusted notification settings, and cleaned up unnecessary clutter. Slowly, her phone became simpler, quieter, and easier to use. You could see the relief on her face.
But that was only the beginning.
Introducing Something New: ChatGPT
After fixing her phone, I showed her something new—ChatGPT.
At first, she was curious but cautious. I could sense a bit of fear:
- “Will I press the wrong button?”
- “Will I break something?”
- “Is it complicated?”
So I kept it simple.
I showed her how to:
- Install the app
- Ask questions in English and Chinese
- Use voice input instead of typing
When she saw that she could simply speak and get answers, her eyes lit up. That moment made all the difference.
The Real Challenge Isn’t Technology — It’s the First Step
From my experience, seniors don’t lack the ability to learn. What holds them back is:
- Fear of making mistakes
- Feeling overwhelmed
- Not knowing where to start
So instead of teaching too much, I gave her just one idea:
“Use it like talking to a friend. Ask one question a day.”
That’s it. No pressure, no complexity.
Learning Together, One Step at a Time
I told her something important:
“You cannot break your phone by asking questions.”
That sentence alone seemed to give her confidence.
Before she left, she said she would try it at home and get familiar with it slowly. I believe she will. Not because she learned everything today—but because she took the first step.
A Small Reflection
This short visit reminded me of something simple but powerful:
Technology is not just about tools.
It’s about people, trust, and encouragement.
Sometimes, helping someone is not about giving answers—
it’s about walking beside them as they begin.
If you are reading this and have a friend or family member who is curious but hesitant about AI, don’t try to teach everything at once.
Just sit with them.
Fix one small problem.
Show one simple use.
That is more than enough to begin.
