Classmates Who Took Unexpected Paths

Because the report card never tells the whole story.

From Playground Mischief to Police Superintendent

A memory of Philip Chan Yan-kin (陈欣健), a spirited classmate whose life journey led from the Royal Hong Kong Police to the world of entertainment.

The La Salle College playground was always lively during recess. Boys were running, shouting, and kicking balls across the dusty ground. Among them was a boy who was impossible not to notice—energetic, fearless, and a little mischievous.

That boy was Philip Chan Yan-kin (陈欣健).

Study was not exactly his favorite activity, but he was clever and bold. I still remember seeing him once in a heated scuffle with a Portuguese classmate in the playground. It was loud, dramatic, and over quickly—the kind of moment that made teachers rush over while the rest of us watched wide-eyed.

Even then, you could sense that he had a strong personality and a sharp mind.

Life later proved just how far that energy could go.

From 1965 to 1976, Chan served as an officer in the Royal Hong Kong Police Force, eventually rising to the rank of Superintendent (警司). During those years he demonstrated courage and leadership while working on several major criminal investigations in Hong Kong during the British colonial era.

One of the most memorable events occurred in 1974, during the dramatic Po Sang Bank Robbery. It was one of the largest armed bank robbery cases Hong Kong had seen at the time, involving robbers holding eleven hostages for ransom

Chan was present at the scene and later spoke to members of the press during a widely remembered press conference.

But he was not an ordinary police officer.

Because of his interest in music and communication, Chan once wrote lyrics and appeared on television to promote road safety for schoolchildren. This unusual combination of law enforcement and public outreach earned him a memorable nickname among the public: “The Singing Inspector.”

After retiring from the police force, Chan successfully moved into the entertainment industry, becoming an actor and producer. Over the years he appeared in numerous films and television productions, building a second career in Hong Kong’s vibrant entertainment world.

Even today, he remains active. Occasionally I see his appearance on social media, still energetic and engaged with life.

Seeing him now brings back memories of that lively playground long ago.

When we were young, we often judged classmates by their exam scores or classroom behavior. But decades later, we realize that life rarely follows such simple measurements.

Character, courage, and personality often matter far more than grades.

And sometimes, the boy who couldn’t sit still in the classroom grows up to live the most extraordinary life.

Canadian Senior Drivers BE READY! Major Driving License Updates

Aging Wisely: Rethinking Health Norms After 75

As we journey through life and reach our late 70s, 80s, and even 90s, it's only natural to reflect on how our bodies change—and how our health needs evolve. Many of us grew up hearing that "normal" blood pressure is 120/80, that bone strength must match that of a 30-year-old, or that regular cancer screenings are essential. But should we still be using the same health standards designed for young adults? The short answer is: not always. In fact, applying young adult norms to older adults can sometimes lead to unnecessary worry—or even harm. Let’s explore how aging changes our bodies and what that means for how we monitor our health. 🩺 Blood Pressure: A Little Higher May Be Healthier You've likely been told that 120/80 mmHg is the ideal blood pressure. But as we age, our arteries naturally stiffen. A systolic pressure between 130–140 may actually be safe and acceptable in older adults, especially if you feel well. Overly aggressive efforts to push blood pressur...
