How I Walked Along with ChatGPT to Set Up “Buy Grandpa a Coffee”

There are some journeys in life that begin with a big plan.

And then there are journeys that begin with a simple question:

“Can people who enjoy my Grandpa Journey blog buy me a coffee?”

That was how my latest little adventure began.

I had seen the idea of “Buy Me a Coffee” before. The concept is simple: if someone enjoys your stories, articles, or the work you share online, they can leave you a small contribution—as if they were buying you a cup of coffee.

I thought it might be a nice addition to Grandpa Journey.

But there was one problem.

I had never set it up before.

So I decided to try something different.

Instead of trying to figure everything out by myself, I asked my AI companion, ChatGPT, to walk along with me.

Starting With a Simple Question

I told ChatGPT what I wanted:

I would like to have a “Buy Grandpa a Coffee” button on my Grandpa Journey blog.

That sounded simple.

But very quickly, I discovered that there were several steps behind that simple button.

I needed to create an account, choose a profile name, connect a payment service, provide business information, verify my identity, connect my bank account, and eventually make sure everything was ready for receiving payouts.

For someone who is not an expert in online payment systems, it could easily become confusing.

But I didn't try to understand everything at once.

I simply took one step at a time.

ChatGPT Became My Walking Companion

This is where the experience became interesting.

I would reach a new screen and tell ChatGPT what I saw.

Sometimes I typed the words on the screen.

Sometimes I sent a screenshot.

Then ChatGPT would explain what the page meant and tell me what to do next.

It wasn't:

“Here are 20 things you need to do. Good luck.”

Instead, it was more like walking with a companion.

We took one step.

Then another.

Then another.

When I wasn't sure whether to click a button, I asked.

When a new page appeared, I described it.

When I received an email from Stripe asking me to provide photo identification, I brought the message to ChatGPT and asked what it meant.

And together, we continued.

Then Came Stripe

The payment side eventually led me to Stripe.

This was the part that felt more serious.

Stripe asked me to verify my identity and provide information about the account representative.

I had to upload identification and complete the verification process.

There were moments when I wasn't completely sure whether I was doing the right thing.

Again, I didn't rush.

I showed ChatGPT what I was seeing, and we went through the process carefully.

Eventually, I connected my RBC bank account for payouts.

Then I reached the payout section.

And finally, the message that I had been waiting for appeared:

Connected.

That was a small word.

But after going through all those steps, it felt like a little victory.

There Were a Few Nervous Moments

The journey wasn't completely smooth.

At one point, Stripe showed a message saying that a required task was past due.

That certainly caught my attention.

I opened the task and found that Stripe needed identity verification.

I followed the instructions, uploaded my photo ID, and completed the requested verification.

Later, the Stripe dashboard showed that there were no further actions required.

We had done it.

The account was ready.

The payout connection was completed.

And my “Buy Grandpa a Coffee” journey had moved from an idea to something real.

What I Learned

The most important thing I learned wasn't actually how to use Stripe.

It was something much simpler:

Don't be afraid of a complicated-looking screen.

Break it into small pieces.

When I first looked at the whole process, I could easily have thought:

“This is too complicated for me.”

But I didn't have to understand the entire system.

I only needed to understand the next step.

That made a huge difference.

And having ChatGPT beside me made the process much less intimidating.

Technology Doesn't Have to Replace Us

Sometimes people talk about artificial intelligence as though AI is going to do everything for us.

My experience was different.

ChatGPT didn't take over the process.

I clicked the buttons.
I read the screens.
I uploaded my identification.
I connected my bank account.
I made the decisions.

ChatGPT simply helped me understand what I was looking at and what I should consider doing next.

In other words, I was still driving the car.

ChatGPT was sitting beside me with the map.

That is probably the way I like using AI the most.

An 80-Year-Old Can Still Learn New Things

I am an 80-year-old grandfather.

I've lived through a time when there were no personal computers, no smartphones, no social media, and certainly no ChatGPT.

Now I'm running blogs, experimenting with AI tools, looking at Google Analytics, exploring affiliate programs, and setting up online payment systems.

Sometimes I have to smile at the journey.

Technology keeps changing.

And apparently, I haven't stopped learning yet.

That's something I hope to remember for a long time.

Being 80 doesn't mean the learning journey is over.

It simply means that sometimes I take the journey a little more slowly.

And that's perfectly fine.

One Step at a Time

Looking back, setting up “Buy Grandpa a Coffee” wasn't really a technical project.

It became another chapter in my Grandpa Journey.

I started with a simple idea.

I wasn't sure how to make it happen.

So I asked my AI companion to walk with me.

We went through the screens together.

We solved one problem at a time.

And eventually, we reached the other side.

That experience reminded me of something I have learned many times in life:

You don't always need to know how to finish the journey before you begin.

Sometimes you just need to know the next step.

Then take it.

And then take the next one.

A Coffee Is More Than a Coffee

If one day a reader decides to click “Buy Grandpa a Coffee,” I will certainly appreciate it.

But for me, the button represents something more than a cup of coffee.

It represents the continuing journey of an old grandfather who is still curious, still exploring, and still willing to learn something new.

And this time, I had a very unusual walking companion beside me.

ChatGPT.

So, thank you, AI companion.

Another little journey completed.

And I suspect there will be many more.

Exploring → Learning → Documenting → Sharing

At 80, I'm still walking.

我以前听说过“Buy Me a Coffee(请我喝杯咖啡)”。

Stripe

Stripe

然后,我来到了 payout(提现)页面。

Connected(已连接)。

ChatGPT。

Grandpa Journey|

I Have 120 YouTube Videos. Maybe It’s Time to Give Them a Home.

For quite some time, I have had a collection of videos sitting quietly on YouTube.

I made many of them over the years, mostly recording ordinary things in my life—family moments, trips, cruises, holidays, places we visited, little projects around the house, and sometimes just something that I thought was interesting enough to record.

At the time, I never imagined that these videos might one day become part of my story.

I simply made them and put them on YouTube.

Now, looking back at them as a grandfather and retiree, I see them differently.

They are not just videos anymore.

They are pieces of my life.

Why I Never Thought About an Archive Before

When I started blogging, my attention was mainly on writing new stories.

There was always something new to talk about.

A morning walk with Julie.
A cup of coffee at the mall.
A family visit.
A trip.
A conversation about AI.
Something happening on my blogs.

And then, quite unexpectedly, my blogs began attracting more readers.

That made me look back at some of the things I had already created.

I realized something rather obvious:

Why keep all those old videos buried inside YouTube when they could help tell the story of my life?

Some of those videos are many years old.

The technology has changed.
My appearance has changed.
Our lives have changed.

But that is exactly what makes them interesting.

They show life as it really was at the time.

One Video Is a Memory. 120 Videos Are a Story.

This is the part that interests me most.

One old video by itself may not mean very much.

But put 120 of them together and something different happens.

They begin to form a kind of visual autobiography.

I may have forgotten some of the details of a trip, a holiday, a cruise or a family event.

But when I watch an old video, suddenly I remember.

"Oh, yes. I remember that place."

"Look how young we were!"

"I had completely forgotten about this."

That is the wonderful thing about video.

A photograph can remind you of a moment.

A video can bring the moment back to life.

You hear the voices.
You see the surroundings.
You watch people moving around.

Sometimes you even hear yourself saying something you had completely forgotten.

So I Am Going to Try Something New

I am thinking of creating an archive of my 120 YouTube videos on Grandpa Journey.

I don't want to simply make a page containing 120 YouTube links.

That would be more like a storage box.

Instead, I would like to give each group of videos a little context.

For example, there could be sections such as:

Family & Everyday Life

The ordinary moments that eventually become precious memories.

Travels & Cruises

Places we visited and experiences from our travels.

Holidays & Celebrations

The occasions that brought family and friends together.

Projects Around the House

Those little projects that seemed important enough to film at the time.

Grandpa's Memories

Videos that don't necessarily fit into a category but tell something about the person I was and the life I lived.

And perhaps there will be a few surprises along the way.

I honestly don't remember everything that is in those 120 videos.

That may actually make the project more fun.

This Is Not About Making Perfect Videos

I want to make one thing clear.

These are not professional productions.

They were made by an ordinary person recording his ordinary life.

Some may have shaky camera work.

Some may have imperfect sound.

Some may look very old-fashioned compared with today's videos.

That's okay.

In fact, I think that is part of their charm.

I don't want to go back and make them look like they were produced yesterday.

I want readers to see them as they really were.

They are historical records of my little corner of the world.

AI May Help Me Do This

There is another interesting part of this project.

I probably would not have thought seriously about organizing all these videos without AI.

Now I can sit down with my AI companion and say:

"Here is another old video. What story does this tell?"

AI can help me organize the videos, suggest categories, write descriptions and perhaps help me connect an old video with a story I have already written.

But the memories themselves are mine.

AI wasn't there when I took the video.

I was.

And that distinction is important to me.

AI can help me organize my memories.

It cannot replace the memories.

A Grandfather's Video Time Capsule

Perhaps the best way to describe what I am creating is a video time capsule.

Imagine a reader discovering Grandpa Journey several years from now.

They may read one of my stories about a family trip.

Then they see an old video connected to that story.

They click it.

Suddenly they are looking at something I recorded years earlier.

That is much more personal than simply reading a paragraph about the trip.

It gives the story another dimension.

And perhaps one day my grandchildren will look at these videos differently too.

They won't just see Grandpa as the person they know today.

They will see a younger version of him.

They will see the places he visited.

They will hear his voice.

They will see ordinary days that nobody thought would become memories.

I Don't Know Exactly Where This Will Lead

And that is perfectly fine.

I have learned not to plan everything too far ahead.

My blog itself has evolved in ways I never expected.

What started as writing has gradually become a mixture of stories, photographs, videos, memories, family history and now conversations with AI.

So I am going to give this video archive a try.

Maybe it will become an important part of Grandpa Journey.

Maybe readers will enjoy discovering these old videos.

Or maybe I will simply enjoy watching them again myself.

Either way, I think it is worth doing.

Because at my age, I have learned something rather simple:

The ordinary moments we almost forget are often the moments worth preserving.

And perhaps those 120 videos have been waiting patiently all these years for someone to open the box.

I think I am finally going to open it.

— Grandpa

P.S. The Videos Archive is an on going project.

I would start small one step at a time.

—— Grandpa

P.S. The Videos Archive is an on going project.

I would start small one step at a time.

Three Generations, One Table, and a Grandpa's Haircut

This morning, Julie and I had the pleasure of treating Alison, Ayden, Hailey, and the family to dim sum.

The restaurant was busy, the baskets kept arriving, and the table quickly filled with everyone's favorite dishes. We ate well, laughed often, and even had enough food left to bring home for Sam, who was working hard and couldn't join us. Although he wasn't at the table, we wanted him to enjoy the meal too.

The total bill came to just $72, including tax and the service charge. These days, that's remarkable value for such a happy family gathering.

As we enjoyed our tea, the conversation turned to Alison's family's recent holiday near the beach.

The children excitedly talked about sleeping in a tent in a place that felt completely different from home. To them, every sound outside the tent, every trail through nature, and every new discovery was an adventure. Their eyes lit up as they shared their stories.

Listening to them reminded me that childhood is filled with wonder.

At the same time, I could also imagine the holiday from the parents' point of view.

While the children were collecting memories, Alison and Sam were setting up camp, preparing meals, carrying supplies, keeping everyone safe, and making sure the trip ran smoothly. Camping is wonderful, but it is also hard work for parents.

Yet they did it gladly because seeing their children happy made every bit of effort worthwhile.

After returning to our house, there was one more small family moment that made me smile.

Ayden asked if Grandpa could trim his hair.

I carefully gave him a haircut, and when I finished, he looked pleased with it. That made me happy.

Then Alison smiled and said she would give it a little touch-up to make it look even better.

I laughed because that's exactly how families work.

Grandpa helps.

Mom perfects.

And everyone goes home feeling loved.

Later in the afternoon, I checked my blog statistics.

Grandpa Journey had already passed 7,000 pageviews for the day. More importantly, Google Analytics showed that readers were spending more time reading my stories and returning to the blog.

Numbers are encouraging, but they are not the reason I write.

Days like today are.

A family meal.

Children sharing their camping adventures.

Parents quietly carrying the responsibilities that make those adventures possible.

A grandson trusting Grandpa with a haircut.

These ordinary moments may never appear in history books, but they become the stories that families remember for years.

As I grow older, I realize that happiness is rarely found in extraordinary events.

More often, it is found around a round table with steaming dim sum, in the laughter of grandchildren, in leftovers packed for someone who had to work, and in a little haircut that ends with a mother's loving touch.

These are the moments I hope to leave behind.

And perhaps, one day, my grandchildren will remember them too.

Ayden

《Grandpa Journey》

How ChatGPT Helped Me Fix My “Very Slow” Laptop This Morning

This morning started with a little frustration.

When I turned on my Windows laptop, the startup process was painfully slow. Everything seemed to crawl. Programs took forever to open, and even simple tasks felt sluggish.

At first, I worried that my laptop might finally be “getting old.”

But instead of panicking, I opened ChatGPT and started a conversation.

Surprisingly, that simple decision turned into a useful troubleshooting session — almost like having a patient tech support companion sitting beside me.

Step 1 — Checking the Basics

ChatGPT first asked me some simple questions:

  • Was I using an SSD drive or an old hard drive?
  • What did Task Manager show for CPU, memory, and disk usage?
  • Was OneDrive running?
  • Any recent updates or unusual popups?

I checked Task Manager and found:

  • CPU: only 4%
  • Memory: around 43%
  • Disk: just 1%

That immediately told us the laptop itself was probably not overloaded.

I also noticed something interesting:

OneDrive showed a popup warning that my cloud storage was almost full, and OneDrive syncing had been paused.

That became an important clue.

Step 2 — Looking Beyond Hardware

Because my SSD drive had already been replaced a few years ago, ChatGPT suggested the problem might not be hardware at all.

Instead, it could be:

  • OneDrive syncing issues
  • Startup apps
  • Wi-Fi or network delays
  • Background cloud services waiting to connect

Apparently, cloud syncing services can sometimes slow Windows startup significantly, especially when internet connections become unstable or OneDrive gets stuck trying to sync files.

That made sense.

Step 3 — A Simple Experiment

Then I did something very simple.

I unplugged the Wi-Fi connection and restarted the laptop.

A few moments later, the startup speed suddenly improved.

That was the breakthrough moment.

After reconnecting power and Wi-Fi again, the laptop remained much faster and more responsive.

The issue was likely related to:

  • unstable Wi-Fi communication,
  • OneDrive attempting to sync during startup,
  • or network services hanging temporarily.

Many Windows users have reported similar experiences where OneDrive or network syncing slowed boot times dramatically.

What I Learned from This Experience

What impressed me most was not just “fixing” the problem.

It was the process.

Instead of randomly clicking settings or worrying unnecessarily, ChatGPT guided me step by step:

  • checking system resources,
  • narrowing down possible causes,
  • eliminating hardware concerns,
  • and testing one possibility at a time.

That logical troubleshooting approach made the problem much less stressful.

AI as a Daily Problem-Solving Companion

This experience reminded me that AI is not only for writing articles or generating images.

Sometimes, it can simply help ordinary people think more clearly when solving everyday problems.

Especially for seniors or non-technical users, having an AI companion available 24 hours a day can make technology feel less intimidating.

You do not need to be a computer expert.

You just need curiosity, patience, and a willingness to ask questions.

A Few Practical Tips If Your Windows Laptop Becomes Very Slow

Here are some useful things you can check before assuming your laptop is “dying”:

  1. Open Task Manager and check CPU, memory, and disk usage.
  2. See whether OneDrive or cloud syncing is stuck.
  3. Restart your Wi-Fi router or temporarily disconnect Wi-Fi to test.
  4. Disable unnecessary startup apps.
  5. Keep enough free disk space available.
  6. Restart the laptop fully instead of leaving it running for days.

Windows startup slowdowns are often caused by startup apps, syncing services, or temporary software conflicts — not necessarily failing hardware.

Final Thoughts

This morning’s “slow laptop crisis” ended up becoming a good learning experience.

Sometimes the solution is simpler than we think.

And sometimes, having an AI companion beside you makes troubleshooting feel less lonely and much more manageable.

Technology may continue to evolve rapidly, but the real value of AI may simply be this:

Helping ordinary people solve ordinary problems — one conversation at a time.

  • Memory:
  • Disk:

  4. 關閉不必要的 Startup Apps(開機程式)

From Our Past to Their Future: Seniors Reflect on AI, Youth, and Changing Times

Yesterday, after lunch at One Chinese Cuisine restaurant near Bayview and Elgin Mills, Julie and I joined a few friends across the street at Tim Hortons.

Just coffee. Nothing special.

But the moment stayed with me.

At one table, a group of us—baby boomers—sat talking about AI, its impact on jobs, and what kind of future our grandchildren might face.

The tone was thoughtful, but also quietly worried.

At another table, not far from us, were groups of students.

Some were drinking coffee. Some were eating donuts. They were laughing, relaxed, and carefree. You could see the happiness on their faces.

And I couldn’t help but notice the contrast.

When we were young, life was very different.

Most families were not well off. We had little or no pocket money. Going out for coffee and snacks like this was not part of our daily life.

What we see today is a generation growing up with far more material comfort and freedom.

In that sense, they have much more than we did.

But as we sat there talking about AI and the future, I wondered—

Will their path really be easier?

We all agreed on one thing.

As baby boomers, we have been a fortunate generation.

We lived through decades of growth and increasing opportunity. Life was not always easy, but the direction was often clear.

Now, the world feels different.

Technology is advancing rapidly. The future is less predictable. And the challenges facing the younger generation may not be visible on the surface.

They may have more materially.

But they may also face more uncertainty.

Sitting in that coffee shop, watching those students and listening to our own conversation, I felt we were witnessing a quiet intersection of past and future.

And perhaps our role now is not to compare—but to understand, to keep learning, and to stay connected to the generations coming after us.

As for me, I have decided to keep learning AI—so I can better understand the world they are growing into.

 New to AI? Start here:

If you’re curious about how to begin using AI in daily life, I’ve been documenting my own journey step by step:

👉 Day 1: New to AI - Start here

You don’t need a technical background.
Just curiosity—and a willingness to try.

A Morning Visit, A Small Fix — Helping a Friend Take the First Step into AI

This morning turned out to be more meaningful than I expected.

Around 9:30 am, a friend of Julie’s came over to our home. She is a senior, eager to learn, but like many others, a little hesitant when it comes to technology. Her main concern was her mobile phone—too many ads, constant alerts, even “virus warnings” popping up when watching YouTube. On top of that, there were unwanted apps installed, making the whole experience confusing and frustrating.

We sat down together and went through her phone step by step.

We removed suspicious apps, adjusted notification settings, and cleaned up unnecessary clutter. Slowly, her phone became simpler, quieter, and easier to use. You could see the relief on her face.

But that was only the beginning.

Introducing Something New: ChatGPT

After fixing her phone, I showed her something new—ChatGPT.

At first, she was curious but cautious. I could sense a bit of fear:

  • “Will I press the wrong button?”
  • “Will I break something?”
  • “Is it complicated?”

So I kept it simple.

I showed her how to:

  • Install the app
  • Ask questions in English and Chinese
  • Use voice input instead of typing

When she saw that she could simply speak and get answers, her eyes lit up. That moment made all the difference.

The Real Challenge Isn’t Technology — It’s the First Step

From my experience, seniors don’t lack the ability to learn. What holds them back is:

  • Fear of making mistakes
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Not knowing where to start

So instead of teaching too much, I gave her just one idea:

“Use it like talking to a friend. Ask one question a day.”

That’s it. No pressure, no complexity.

Learning Together, One Step at a Time

I told her something important:

“You cannot break your phone by asking questions.”

That sentence alone seemed to give her confidence.

Before she left, she said she would try it at home and get familiar with it slowly. I believe she will. Not because she learned everything today—but because she took the first step.

A Small Reflection

This short visit reminded me of something simple but powerful:

Technology is not just about tools.
It’s about people, trust, and encouragement.

Sometimes, helping someone is not about giving answers—
it’s about walking beside them as they begin.

If you are reading this and have a friend or family member who is curious but hesitant about AI, don’t try to teach everything at once.

Just sit with them.
Fix one small problem.
Show one simple use.

That is more than enough to begin.

Grandpa Journey — Learning, sharing, and walking forward together.
