From Reunion Dinner to Digital Future: AI at the Chinese New Year Table

Chinese New Year’s Eve has always been about reunion.

Family members travel from near and far. The dining table fills with traditional dishes prepared with care and patience. Laughter echoes across generations. It is a time of gratitude, memory, and renewal.

This year, our reunion dinner carried something more.

A Table Full of Tradition

The evening was warm and lively. Authentic Chinese dishes filled the table — each one representing hours of preparation by Sam’s mom and her sons. The food was not just delicious; it was an expression of love.

We chatted, exchanged New Year wishes, and reflected on the year gone by. It was everything a reunion dinner should be.

And yet, something quietly symbolic happened.

When AI Spoke Cantonese

During the gathering, Sam helped his mother set up ChatGPT on her phone — in Cantonese.

There it was:
Ancient tradition on the dining table.
Artificial intelligence in her hands.

It was a simple act — a son patiently guiding his mother through a new technology. But to me, it felt meaningful.

Chinese New Year represents renewal.
What could be more fitting than learning something new?

Three Generations, One Table

At that table sat three generations:

  • A mother learning to use AI.

  • A son advocating technology in daily life.

  • And me — someone in his late seventies, already using AI to write, think, and improve my English.

Tradition and technology were not in conflict. They were coexisting.

For thousands of years, our culture has valued learning. Confucian philosophy emphasized lifelong education. In a way, learning to use AI is simply a modern continuation of that spirit.

My Own Quiet Journey with AI

Over the past year, I have been sharing my experience using ChatGPT on my blog. I write my posts, then read them aloud to improve my spoken English. Gradually, I noticed something surprising: I can now discuss global topics more freely in English — sometimes even more naturally than in Cantonese.

That improvement did not happen overnight. It was quiet, steady progress.

Seeing Sam guide his mother reminded me that learning has no age limit.

The Meaning Behind the Moment

What touched me most was not the technology itself.

It was the bridge.

A son ensuring his mother is not left behind.
A family welcoming new tools without abandoning old traditions.
A New Year dinner that symbolized both heritage and future.

The reunion table was no longer just about memory — it was also about momentum.

Looking Forward

As we begin another year, I feel hopeful.

Hopeful that families can grow together.
Hopeful that seniors can embrace new tools with confidence.
Hopeful that tradition and innovation can sit side by side.

Chinese New Year reminds us that renewal is always possible.

This year, renewal came not only through food and blessings —
but through a simple Cantonese conversation with artificial intelligence.

From Family Dinners to a Changing World: Observing Gains and Losses

Yesterday, after breakfast at Golden Horse and a quick shopping trip to FreshCo, my house was filled with the usual warmth: Julie preparing dinner, grandchildren exploring, and laughter echoing in the kitchen.

The children were immersed in Google Gemini, asking how to make videos from just a few photos. Sam, their father, guided them patiently. They were learning and having fun.

I couldn’t help but reflect on the contrast: at school, AI is restricted. The children are expected to rely on their own thinking, to develop original ideas. At home, they explore freely, guided by curiosity.

It reminded me of my own experiences growing up. My generation, the baby boomers, gradually lost mental calculation skills because calculators replaced the need to practice arithmetic. My father’s generation memorized telephone numbers because necessity demanded it. Each era develops different skills, shaped by its tools.

There is gain and there is pain. Technology gives unprecedented efficiency, access, and creative tools. Yet, there is also the subtle erosion of human values that are indispensable for a harmonious world: patience, empathy, reflection, and responsibility.

This is not just a personal or family concern. It is becoming a global one. When societies focus only on money, efficiency, and gain, this imbalance appears in daily life and escalates into larger systems, even geopolitical conflicts. It is not merely human error — it is a structural challenge amplified by our tools.

Observing three generations in one day — grandchildren learning, adults guiding, seniors reflecting — reminded me that the key is balance. Tools can amplify both our abilities and our weaknesses. Values, curiosity, and connection must remain central.

The world is moving fast. Gains are easy to see. Losses are quieter but real. And perhaps, the quietest change, the one most profound, begins at home, around a dinner table, with family, friends, and shared observation.

If you want, I can also create hashtags, meta description, and FAQs for this reflective post just like we did for your ChatGPT dinner post.

Do you want me to do that?

a few subtle closing lines

Absolutely, David. Here are a few options for subtle, reflective closings — calm, thought-provoking, and in your style:

  1. Sometimes, the quietest lessons are learned not in headlines, but around a dinner table.

  2. Tools may change, generations may change, but what matters most quietly persists: connection, curiosity, and care.

  3. The world moves fast. Gains are easy to see. Losses are quieter — and perhaps the most important to notice.

  4. Technology will evolve, but the foundation of human values remains with those who nurture it daily.

  5. In the end, observation, reflection, and shared moments may be the most powerful tools we have.

When AI Becomes a Gardener: How My Daughter Saved Her Indoor Plants with ChatGPT

 Technology surprises me again.

Recently, my daughter shared something that truly impressed me. She had been growing indoor plants and flowers at home. Everything looked fine at first — green leaves, healthy stems — but after some time, the flowers started looking tired. Some leaves turned yellow. A few edges were drying out.

Instead of guessing, she did something simple.

She took a picture of the plant.

Then she uploaded the photo to ChatGPT and asked, “What’s wrong with my plant?”

Within seconds, the response came back.

It analyzed the image and suggested:

  • The plant might be receiving too much water

  • Some leaves should be trimmed

  • The placement may need more indirect sunlight

  • Air circulation could be improved

Clear. Calm. Practical.

She followed the advice:
She trimmed the unhealthy leaves.
She adjusted the watering schedule.
She moved the plant to a better spot.

And gradually, the flowers recovered.

Now she is very happy — and honestly, so am I.

What This Means for Us

This story is not just about gardening.

It shows something important:

AI is not just for programmers, engineers, or young people.
It can help in everyday life — even something as gentle and simple as caring for flowers.

In the past, if a plant looked unhealthy, we might:

  • Flip through a gardening book

  • Search multiple websites

  • Ask friends

  • Or simply guess

Now, with one photo and one question, we get structured guidance in seconds.

That doesn’t mean AI replaces experience.
It supports it.

My daughter still used her judgment. She observed. She adjusted gradually. She didn’t blindly follow instructions. She partnered with the tool.

That’s the key.

A New Kind of Learning

What I find most fascinating is this:

We used to learn by reading.
Now we can learn by interacting.

You can ask:

  • Why are my orchid leaves turning yellow?

  • How often should I water this plant?

  • Is this fungus or just dry soil?

And the answer comes back clearly explained.

For seniors especially, this reduces frustration.

You don’t need to know technical plant names.
You don’t need to search complicated gardening forums.
You simply describe the problem — or show it.

From Flowers to Everyday Life

If ChatGPT can help with flowers, imagine what else it can assist with:

  • Identifying skin irritation on a houseplant

  • Choosing fertilizer

  • Planning a small balcony garden

  • Understanding seasonal plant care

And beyond gardening:

  • Choosing a watermelon

  • Planning travel

  • Improving English

  • Understanding health articles

It becomes a patient assistant.

A Quiet Reflection

When I was young, we relied heavily on elders for knowledge.

Today, knowledge sits quietly inside our devices — waiting to be asked.

But here’s what I believe:

The real wisdom is still human.

AI gives information.
We provide judgment.

My daughter used AI to care for her flowers.
But it was her love and attention that made them grow.

Technology can guide.
But care makes things flourish.

And perhaps that applies not only to plants — but to life itself.

When My Eyes Are Tired, I Let the Blog Read to Me

As we grow older, our eyes quietly tell us the truth.

Some days, they are fine.
Other days, especially after a long morning on the computer or phone, they get tired faster than before.

I noticed this while writing and reading my own blog.

I still enjoy reading—very much. But sometimes my eyes say, “Enough for now.”
That’s when I asked myself a simple question:

Why must reading always rely on the eyes?

A Small Change That Made a Big Difference

Recently, I added a Listen / Stop button to my blog.

With just one click, the article reads itself out loud.
I can lean back, rest my eyes, and simply listen.

No rushing.
No squinting.
No pressure to “finish the article”.

It feels surprisingly comfortable.

This Is Not About Laziness — It’s About Smart Aging

Some people think listening instead of reading means giving up.

I see it differently.

As seniors, we adapt.
We adjust.
We choose tools that work with our bodies, not against them.

Listening helps when:

  • Eyes feel dry or tired

  • Reading small text becomes uncomfortable

  • You want to relax while still learning something new

It’s not a replacement for reading—it’s another way to enjoy it.

Technology Can Be Gentle

We often hear big, scary words like “AI” and “technology”.

But in reality, some of the best technology is quiet and gentle.
It doesn’t demand attention.
It simply helps when needed.

For me, this Listen button is one of those tools.

When my eyes are tired, my curiosity doesn’t have to stop.

A Small Note to Fellow Seniors

If your eyes feel tired:

  • Take breaks

  • Increase text size

  • And when possible… let technology lend you a voice

Aging is not about doing less.
It’s about doing things more wisely.

If you’d like to try it, just click the Listen button and see how it feels.

Your eyes may thank you.

Grandpa Journey

FAQs (Senior-Friendly)

Q1: Do I need special software to use the Listen button?
No. It works directly in your browser—no installation needed.

Q2: Can I stop the reading anytime?
Yes. Just click the Stop button whenever you like.

Q3: Is listening as effective as reading?
For understanding and relaxation, yes. Many people remember just as well—or even better—by listening.

From GPT-3 to Today: Watching ChatGPT Evolve Through a Grandpa’s Eyes

A Grandpa’s Reflection on Learning, Writing, and Growing Old with AI

December 24 is the kind of day that makes an old man pause.

The year is almost over. Christmas is just around the corner. The world feels a little quieter, and my thoughts naturally drift backward—toward how things were, and how quickly they have changed. One of those changes, surprisingly, is ChatGPT.

When I first heard about something called “GPT-3,” I honestly didn’t think much of it. Another piece of technology, I thought. I’ve lived long enough to see many “big breakthroughs” come and go. But this one stayed with me.

When ChatGPT Was Still Learning to Walk

In the beginning, ChatGPT felt like a clever but clumsy student. It could write sentences and answer questions, but sometimes it missed the point entirely. I would read its replies and think, “You’re smart, but you don’t quite understand yet.”

Still, there was something promising about it. It reminded me of watching a child learn—awkward at first, full of mistakes, but eager and curious. I didn’t rely on it back then. I experimented with it, cautiously, like dipping a toe into cold water.

A Steady Improvement, One Conversation at a Time

An older writer reflecting on the evolution of ChatGPT and lifelong learning with AI

As newer versions came along, I noticed something important: ChatGPT was getting better at listening.

It began to understand context. It followed my train of thought. It didn’t rush me. For someone my age, that patience matters. Writing is not always easy anymore. Thoughts are there, but they don’t always line up neatly.

Slowly, ChatGPT became less of a machine and more of a quiet helper sitting beside me.

It didn’t replace my thinking. It helped me organize it.

Writing No Longer Feels Like a Lonely Task

In my younger days, writing meant sitting alone with a pen or a typewriter. Later, it was a keyboard and a blinking cursor. Today, there is a conversation.

When I write with ChatGPT, I don’t feel rushed or judged. I can say, “This doesn’t sound right,” and try again. I can ask for clarity, tone, or flow. It feels less like correcting mistakes and more like having a patient editor who never gets tired.

For an older blogger, that is a gift.

From Tool to Companion

Some people worry that AI will replace humans. At my age, I don’t see it that way.

ChatGPT doesn’t have memories of childhood. It doesn’t know the weight of years, the joy of watching grandchildren grow, or the quiet sadness that sometimes comes with aging. Those things belong to us.

What ChatGPT does well is help us express those experiences more clearly.

I don’t treat it as a shortcut. I treat it as a companion—one that helps me say what I already feel, but sometimes struggle to put into words.

What I’ve Learned Along the Way

Looking back from GPT-3 to today, a few simple lessons stand out:

Technology is only useful if we use it with intention

Good questions matter more than clever answers

AI can polish words, but it cannot replace life experience

Learning does not stop just because we grow old

If anything, tools like ChatGPT remind me that curiosity is still alive, no matter our age.

A Christmas Eve Thought

On this December 24, I don’t see ChatGPT as something magical or frightening. I see it as part of the ongoing story of learning—one that didn’t end when I retired.

From GPT-3 to today, ChatGPT has grown more capable. But what matters more is how it has helped people like me continue to write, reflect, and stay mentally engaged.

Growing old does not mean standing still.

As long as we are willing to learn, ask questions, and share our thoughts, the journey continues—sometimes with a little help from an unexpected companion.

And that, I believe, is something worth being grateful for.

AI Learning for Seniors: Week 1 (Parallel Edition)

📖 Week 1 (Parallel Edition)

中文English
Week 1: What is AI?

For our generation, AI (Artificial Intelligence) may sound unfamiliar. We often hear it in the news, but it feels distant and abstract. In reality, AI has already entered our daily lives. From voice assistants on our phones, to online translation tools, to recommendation systems on YouTube or Netflix—all of these rely on AI quietly working in the background.

My first step was to accept one idea: AI is not something unreachable. It is already in our hands and can become a helpful companion in everyday life.

A little visual time travel... 80, 90 and 100 years old by ChatGPT-5

75 (2020)

A Little Visual Time Travel

By  David Au

They say a picture is worth a thousand words… but what about four pictures spanning decades?

Recently, I stumbled across a fascinating experiment — turning one photo into a small journey through time. Starting from 75 (2020), I wanted to see what I might have looked like at 80, 90… and what I might look like at 100.

Using AI portrait aging (and a little digital magic), I now have three versions of myself:

  • 80 years old — my real, present-day self. This is the me my friends, family, and readers know today. A little more silver in the hair, a little more wisdom in the gaze.

  • 90 years old — the lines deepen, the skin softens, but the spark remains. Life has written a few more stories on my face, but there’s still mischief in the eyes.

  • 100 years old — a century’s worth of living in a single frame. The face of someone who has seen the world change in ways unimaginable, yet still carries a gentle smile.

Looking at these portraits side-by-side is humbling. We don’t get to actually “see” ourselves change over the decades — usually, the process is slow and invisible until we suddenly find an old photo. This little project gave me a rare chance to pause time, skip backward, and then leap forward.

It’s not just vanity — it’s reflection. It’s curiosity. It’s a reminder that aging is not just about wrinkles and white hair; it’s about accumulating stories, experiences, and depth.

If you ever get the chance, try this for yourself. You might discover, as I did, that no matter the age, your eyes still carry the same soul.

 By David Au

✅ “One of my favorite foods is dumplings.”
✅ “I remember visiting the Great Wall with my family. It was a sunny day, and I felt excited.”

✨ Coming Soon:
