👉 Why I want to leave my stories behind

Every person is born with a biological blueprint that helps shape who we become. But life is not only determined by our beginnings. Along ...

Three Generations, One Table, and a Grandpa's Haircut

This morning, Julie and I had the pleasure of treating Alison, Ayden, Hailey, and the family to dim sum.

The restaurant was busy, the baskets kept arriving, and the table quickly filled with everyone's favorite dishes. We ate well, laughed often, and even had enough food left to bring home for Sam, who was working hard and couldn't join us. Although he wasn't at the table, we wanted him to enjoy the meal too.

The total bill came to just $72, including tax and the service charge. These days, that's remarkable value for such a happy family gathering.

As we enjoyed our tea, the conversation turned to Alison's family's recent holiday near the beach.

The children excitedly talked about sleeping in a tent in a place that felt completely different from home. To them, every sound outside the tent, every trail through nature, and every new discovery was an adventure. Their eyes lit up as they shared their stories.

Listening to them reminded me that childhood is filled with wonder.

At the same time, I could also imagine the holiday from the parents' point of view.

While the children were collecting memories, Alison and Sam were setting up camp, preparing meals, carrying supplies, keeping everyone safe, and making sure the trip ran smoothly. Camping is wonderful, but it is also hard work for parents.

Yet they did it gladly because seeing their children happy made every bit of effort worthwhile.

After returning to our house, there was one more small family moment that made me smile.

Ayden asked if Grandpa could trim his hair.

I carefully gave him a haircut, and when I finished, he looked pleased with it. That made me happy.

Then Alison smiled and said she would give it a little touch-up to make it look even better.

I laughed because that's exactly how families work.

Grandpa helps.

Mom perfects.

And everyone goes home feeling loved.

Later in the afternoon, I checked my blog statistics.

Grandpa Journey had already passed 7,000 pageviews for the day. More importantly, Google Analytics showed that readers were spending more time reading my stories and returning to the blog.

Numbers are encouraging, but they are not the reason I write.

Days like today are.

A family meal.

Children sharing their camping adventures.

Parents quietly carrying the responsibilities that make those adventures possible.

A grandson trusting Grandpa with a haircut.

These ordinary moments may never appear in history books, but they become the stories that families remember for years.

As I grow older, I realize that happiness is rarely found in extraordinary events.

More often, it is found around a round table with steaming dim sum, in the laughter of grandchildren, in leftovers packed for someone who had to work, and in a little haircut that ends with a mother's loving touch.

These are the moments I hope to leave behind.

And perhaps, one day, my grandchildren will remember them too.

Ayden

《Grandpa Journey》
