U.S.–China Competition in the 21st Century: A Grandpa’s Reflection

The other day, while browsing YouTube, I stumbled upon a discussion that made me pause and think.
For nearly two decades, the United States has increasingly viewed China as its most important strategic rival.
But is this rivalry simply about trade and tariffs — or something much deeper involving technology, resources, and global influence?
As I listened, I began reflecting on how this growing competition may shape the world our children and grandchildren will inherit.
Here are a few thoughts from a curious grandpa trying to make sense of today’s changing world.

The speaker made a very clear argument:

For nearly two decades, the United States has viewed China as its most important geopolitical competitor.

Regardless of the diplomatic language used — partnership, competition, or strategic rivalry — the underlying attitude has gradually become more confrontational.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with that view, it raises an important question worth thinking about.

How did the world arrive at this point?

From the Soviet Union to China

For 47 years after World War II, the United States treated the Soviet Union as its primary adversary.

That rivalry defined global politics until 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed and split into 15 independent countries.

From 1992 to around 2008, the world briefly entered what many called a “unipolar moment.”
The United States stood as the only superpower.

During that time:

  • NATO expanded in Europe

  • The United States focused on global security leadership

  • The global economy was increasingly integrated

Then came September 11, 2001.

America’s strategic attention shifted to the Middle East, leading to long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Shock of 2008

Another turning point arrived in 2008, when the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis triggered a global financial crisis.

At that time, China launched a massive 4-trillion-RMB stimulus program to stabilize its economy and boost demand.

China also expanded trade and opened its domestic market further.

Around the same time, several symbolic events captured global attention:

  • China’s response to the Wenchuan earthquake

  • The spectacular 2008 Beijing Olympics

  • The creation of the G20, giving emerging economies a larger role in global governance

For many observers, these developments signaled that China’s global influence was rising rapidly.

From that point on, Washington increasingly began to treat China not just as a trading partner — but as a strategic competitor.

Competition That Has Been Building for Years

Many people think U.S.–China tensions started only recently.

In reality, the rivalry has been building for nearly two decades.

Tariffs, trade disputes, technology restrictions, and geopolitical tensions are only the visible parts of a much deeper competition.

Even the so-called tariff war has already lasted several years.

Interestingly, despite these pressures:

  • The United States has not collapsed.

  • China has not collapsed either.

China’s exports remain strong, and industries such as:

  • electric vehicles

  • solar energy

  • lithium batteries

  • AI and robotics

  • rare-earth materials

have continued to advance.

Clearly, both countries remain powerful.

A Three-Layer Strategic Competition

Some analysts describe the rivalry as unfolding across three major dimensions.

1. Resources

Energy and critical minerals are becoming extremely important in the age of AI, electric vehicles, and renewable energy.

Materials like:

  • copper

  • rare earth elements

  • lithium

  • aluminum

are essential to modern industry.

Whoever controls these supply chains gains significant influence over the future of manufacturing.

2. Finance

For decades, the United States has maintained enormous global influence through the U.S. dollar and financial system.

International trade, investments, and global reserves are still heavily linked to the dollar.

Even as new financial technologies emerge — such as digital currencies and stablecoins — the U.S. is trying to ensure these systems remain connected to the dollar.

Maintaining financial leadership remains a central pillar of American global power.

3. Technology

Perhaps the most intense competition is in technology.

Fields like:

  • artificial intelligence

  • semiconductors

  • quantum computing

  • advanced materials

  • biotechnology

will shape the future global economy.

Both the United States and China are investing enormous resources in these areas.

The goal is not simply innovation — but technological leadership.

Two Different Ways of Seeing the World

Some commentators describe the rivalry in cultural terms.

They say Western strategic thinking often resembles a hunter’s mindset — competition, dominance, and zero-sum struggles.

Meanwhile, Chinese philosophy has traditionally emphasized balance, coexistence, and long-term harmony.

Of course, reality is more complicated than such simple contrasts.

But it is interesting to see how different civilizations interpret global competition.

The Deep Waters Ahead

The world is now entering what some analysts call a “deep-water phase” of U.S.–China competition.

The stakes are high.

The outcome will shape:

  • global trade

  • technology leadership

  • geopolitical alliances

  • the future world order

Yet history teaches an important lesson.

Great competitions are rarely decided by who shouts the loudest or who acts the toughest.

More often, the real winners are determined by internal strength — economic vitality, technological innovation, social stability, and wise leadership.

A Grandpa’s Reflection

At my stage of life, I no longer see global politics as a simple contest between heroes and villains.

The world is far too complex for that.

What I hope to see is wisdom on all sides.

The United States and China are the two largest economies in the world.

If they cooperate, the world benefits.

If they clash recklessly, the world suffers.

As ordinary citizens — and perhaps as grandparents — we can only hope that leaders on both sides remember one simple truth:

The future of humanity is shared.

And in the long run, cooperation is always stronger than confrontation.

In the end, history rarely rewards the loudest voice or the toughest posture.
Great nations rise and fall not only by power, but by wisdom and restraint.
The real strength of a country lies in the creativity of its people and the stability of its society.
For ordinary citizens like us, peace and cooperation matter far more than rivalry.
Perhaps the greatest hope for our world is that competition will inspire progress — but never destroy our shared future.

Has the China-US Competition Entered Deep Waters?

 Observations from a Retired Grandpa

Recently, I stumbled upon a YouTube video titled “What Is the Basis of the U.S. Anti-China Strategy? Has China-US Competition Entered Deep Waters?”

After watching it, I couldn’t help but think:
The world today seems to be going through a silent but intense competition between two superpowers.

It’s not exactly a Cold War, yet it feels somewhat like one.
It’s not an all-out confrontation, yet the rivalry is becoming deeper and more complex.

Many analysts say:
The China-US competition has entered “deep waters.”

So, what does that really mean?

1. This Is Not an Ordinary Relationship

The China-US relationship is not like regular diplomacy.

Globally, these two countries represent different forces and systems, so changes in their relationship often affect the entire world.

In simple terms:

  • The U.S. is the current leader of the international order

  • China is a rapidly rising power

When a rising power meets the existing world leader, history often produces tension and competition.

This isn’t conspiracy theory—it’s a historical pattern.

2. The Core of U.S. Strategy: Maintaining Dominance

Many believe the core of the U.S. strategy toward China is simple:

Prevent another superpower from dominating the world order.

In recent years, we’ve seen several clear policy directions:

1. Trade and Economic Competition

The U.S.-China trade war starting in 2018 was the first wave of conflict.

Tariffs, supply chain restructuring, and reshoring manufacturing are all part of a global economic competition.

2. Technology Competition

If the 20th-century competition was about oil and steel,

then the 21st-century competition is about technology.

For example:

  • Semiconductors

  • AI

  • Communications technology

  • Aerospace and military tech

Being ahead in technology means:

  • Economic advantage

  • Military advantage

  • International influence

So tech competition will only become more intense.

3. Geopolitics and Alliances

Another key strategy is building alliances.

The U.S. has been strengthening partnerships with:

  • Japan

  • South Korea

  • Australia

  • The Philippines

  • NATO

While also forming new security collaborations in the Indo-Pacific.

The goal is clear: maintain balance in geopolitics.

3. Why “Deep Waters”?

In the past, China-US relations were often:

Cooperation + Competition

But now, it’s gradually becoming:

Competition + Containment

Examples include:

  • Technology restrictions

  • Investment reviews

  • Supply chain adjustments

  • Increased military deployments

They still cooperate on issues like:

  • Climate change

  • Global financial stability

But overall, the atmosphere has changed.

This is why analysts say:

The great-power competition has entered deep waters.

4. How Should Ordinary People View This?

As a retired grandpa, my feeling is simple:

The world is changing—fast.

My generation has witnessed:

  • The Cold War

  • Globalization

  • China’s rise

  • The AI era

Now we are seeing a new historical stage.

But one thing hasn’t changed:

Ordinary people still hope for peace and stability.

Because in any conflict, those who suffer most are always the people.

5. A Grandpa’s Reflection

I often think:

If history is a river,
then great-power politics are the rapids.

Our daily lives are like small villages on the riverbank.

We cannot change the river’s direction,
but we can choose how to live.

So for me, every day:

  • Playing table tennis

  • Chatting with friends

  • Writing blog posts

  • Learning AI

These ordinary activities are, in fact, the truest expressions of life.

Closing Thoughts

The China-US competition may continue for many years.
The world order may slowly change.

But no matter how the world changes,

for ordinary people, what matters most is:

Stay rational, keep learning, and stay kind.

The historical waves will come and go.
But human wisdom and peace are the treasures worth protecting.

The world may change, waves may rise, and rivers may run deep.
Great-power rivalry tests patience and wisdom.
Ordinary life—friendship, learning, joy—is our anchor.
Play, chat, write, explore—these are real victories.
Peace, kindness, and curiosity are treasures no rivalry can take away.

特朗普去年初再度上臺後 換了一種打法 第一階段延續關稅戰 以「特別關稅」正面對抗;

預期美國GDP屆時將會是40萬億美元 總負債屆時將會是64萬億美元;

理論上會造成恐慌性拋售 現時美國總債務已突破38萬億美元 去年美國GDP是30.8萬億美元;

半導體、AI這些領域美國可能落後於中國 那就徹底追不上;

軍事上讓「盟友」當馬前卒 輿論上製造認知混亂;

我自己的想法是唯一能約束我的東西” 這幾句話的分量很重 它意味著美國通過民主選舉程序選出了一個獨裁者;

筆者完全同意 要承認這一點 才能夠保持清醒的頭腦;

The Panama Canal Shake-Up: When a Global Waterway Becomes a Battleground

I recently came across a YouTube video that dives into the changing control of the Panama Canal and the political storm surrounding it. What initially looks like a business deal quickly reveals something much bigger — a window into U.S.–China rivalry, global trade security, and the uneasy line between law and politics.

This is not just another international headline. It’s about how the world really works today.

🚢 Why the Panama Canal Still Matters

The Panama Canal is only about 80 kilometers long, but it connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, saving ships weeks of travel around South America. Roughly 6% of global maritime trade passes through this narrow corridor.

In simple terms:
If the canal is disrupted, global trade slows, costs rise, and everyday prices can be affected — from fuel to food to consumer goods.

That’s why who controls the ports at both ends of the canal matters almost as much as the canal itself.

🏗️ Li Ka-shing and the Port Sale

For years, ports at both ends of the canal — Balboa and Cristóbal — were operated by a company under Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing’s CK Hutchison.

In early 2025, CK Hutchison agreed to sell these port operations to a consortium led by BlackRock, the large U.S. investment firm, in a deal reportedly worth over US$19 billion.

From a business perspective, this looked like a classic Li Ka-shing move:

  • Reduce political risk

  • Cash out at the right time

  • Step away before tensions escalate

From a geopolitical perspective, however, the deal raised eyebrows on all sides.

⚖️ Law, Courts, or Politics?

Things became more complicated when Panama’s Supreme Court ruled that the original port concessions violated the country’s constitution, effectively voiding the contracts.

This triggered strong reactions:

  • China criticized the ruling, arguing that Chinese-linked companies were being treated unfairly.

  • Panama’s government insisted the decision was about sovereignty and constitutional law.

  • The United States, while less vocal publicly, has long signaled that it views Chinese involvement in strategic infrastructure in the Western Hemisphere as a security concern.

So the uncomfortable question arises:

Is this a case of judicial independence — or geopolitical pressure wearing legal clothes?

In today’s world, the honest answer may be: a bit of both.

♟️ The Bigger U.S.–China Chessboard

To understand this story, we need to zoom out.

  • The U.S. has historically considered the Panama Canal part of its strategic backyard. Even after handing control to Panama in 1999, Washington never stopped caring deeply about who influences it.

  • China, through trade, infrastructure investment, and global logistics, has expanded its footprint worldwide — including Latin America.

  • Panama, a small country sitting at a global crossroads, must constantly balance economic opportunity with political reality.

The canal has become a symbol, not just a shipping lane — a test of who shapes the rules of global trade.

🌐 Why This Matters to Ordinary People

It’s easy to think this is far removed from daily life. It isn’t.

This story touches on:

  • Supply chains — which affect prices we pay

  • Rule of law vs. power politics — a question facing many countries

  • A changing world order — where business, law, and diplomacy are increasingly intertwined

There are fewer “purely commercial” decisions left in the world. Strategic assets are no longer just assets — they’re leverage.

🧭 Final Thoughts: A Canal, a Mirror of the World

The Panama Canal does not belong to any single country or corporation. It belongs to the global system that depends on it.

Yet its current turmoil reminds us of a sobering truth:

In a world shaped by great-power competition,
even water can become political.

For those of us who have lived long enough to see the Cold War, globalization, and now a fractured world order, this feels familiar — history repeating itself, but in modern form.

That’s why stories like this matter. They help us understand not just what is happening, but why the world feels increasingly tense, uncertain, and divided.
