The Day the Sky Turned Amber: A Senior’s Observation of Wildfire Smoke and Summer Heat

Grandpa Journey — July 15, 2026

This morning, when I stepped outside my home, I immediately felt that something was different.

The summer heat was already waiting at the driveway. The air felt heavy with humidity, and after only a few steps, my body could feel the warmth and moisture surrounding me. But what caught my attention most was the sky.

The whole surrounding area seemed to be painted with an unusual amber-yellow color. It was not the bright blue summer sky that we usually enjoy. Instead, there was a soft but mysterious yellowish glow, almost like nature had placed a filter over the neighbourhood.

Then I noticed the smell.

The air carried a smoky scent from the wildfires in the area. It reminded me that the beautiful-looking sky was actually a sign of something more serious happening in nature. The wildfire smoke had travelled far enough to affect our daily life, changing not only the appearance of the sky but also the quality of the air we breathe.

As a senior, these moments make me more aware of the relationship between our health and the environment.

In recent months, I have been working hard to improve my walking. With encouragement from my wife Julie and family, I have been walking regularly at places like Hillcrest Mall and Markville Mall. Recently, I was happy to discover that my walking speed and confidence had improved. Keeping pace with my daughter Alison during a walk at Hillcrest Mall gave me a wonderful feeling of progress.

But today is not a day to challenge myself outdoors.

Sometimes wisdom means knowing when to slow down.

With high temperatures, humidity, and poor air quality, seniors need to pay more attention. A healthy lifestyle is not only about exercising every day; it is also about understanding our body, respecting nature, and making smart choices.

So today, instead of walking outside under the smoky sky, I may choose an indoor walk, enjoy a cup of coffee, or spend some time improving my old YouTube videos with new technology. Life continues, even when the weather changes.

Looking at the amber sky today, I was reminded of something simple:

Every day gives us a new story.

The sky changes.
The weather changes.
Our bodies change.

But curiosity, gratitude, and the desire to learn can keep us young at heart.

This is another chapter of my Grandpa Journey.

Grandpa Journey(爷爷的旅程)

这,就是我今天的 Grandpa Journey(爷爷的旅程)
