Follow-up to "A Rainy Day and an Unexpected Car Repair"
The day after picking up my Toyota RAV4 from the garage, I found myself thinking about what might have caused the CV joint and axle damage that led to the repair.
The repair bill came to about C$1,000, including tax, and involved replacing the CV joints, shafts, and axles on both sides of the vehicle. Thankfully, the problem was discovered before it became a more serious breakdown, and the work was covered by a one-year warranty.
As I sat at home that evening listening to the rain outside, I began reflecting on the possible causes.
Was it the potholes?
Like many drivers in Ontario, I have driven over my share of potholes. Some are small and unavoidable, while others seem to appear overnight after a long winter. Even when we try to avoid them, a sudden bump can place stress on the suspension, steering components, and drive axles.
Was it the railway crossings?
I also thought about the many times I crossed railway tracks. Perhaps I did not slow down enough on some occasions. A sharp impact from uneven rails can send a shock through the vehicle, especially as it ages. Although a single crossing may not cause damage, repeated impacts over the years can gradually take their toll.
Or was it the accident a few months ago?
A few months back, another vehicle collided with my RAV4. The accident damaged the front bumper, one headlight, and left scratches along the right front door. The visible damage was repaired, and the vehicle seemed to drive normally afterward.
Still, I cannot help wondering whether the impact may have contributed to hidden stress on some of the front-end components. It is difficult to know for certain. Modern vehicles are complex machines, and damage does not always show up immediately.
The truth is that I may never know the exact cause.
Perhaps it was one major event.
Perhaps it was years of normal wear and tear.
Or perhaps it was a combination of potholes, railway crossings, the accident, and simply the passage of time.
What this experience reminded me is that every vehicle has a story. Every kilometre travelled leaves its mark. Just as our bodies change as we grow older, so do our cars.
The important thing is not to dwell on what caused the problem but to deal with it when it appears.
I am grateful that I noticed the grease leaking onto the garage floor. I am grateful that the mechanic identified the problem quickly. Most of all, I am grateful that the repair was completed before a roadside breakdown occurred.
Life often teaches us the same lesson.
We cannot always determine exactly why problems arise. Sometimes we simply have to recognize them, address them, and move forward.
Today the RAV4 is back on the road, and so am I.
And that, perhaps, is what matters most.

《Grandpa Journey》
也许是一次严重冲击;
也许是多年正常磨损的累积;
