There are places in a shopping mall that we remember for more than shopping. Sometimes, it is simply a comfortable corner, a familiar restaurant, or a little discovery that makes an ordinary day more enjoyable.
For Julie and me, Kibo Sushi House at Hillcrest Mall is one of those places.
A quiet corner we enjoy
We have often sat just outside Kibo Sushi House, enjoying the relatively quiet and bright corner. It is a pleasant spot to take a break from walking around the mall, sit down for a while, and watch the world go by.
Nearby, there are communication service providers such as Bell, Rogers, and TELUS. People come and go, visiting the stores to ask questions, compare phone plans, or deal with their everyday communication needs. Yet, despite the activity around us, our little seating area feels relatively peaceful.
At our age, we have learned to appreciate these small comforts. We do not always need an exciting destination or an elaborate outing. Sometimes, a comfortable seat and a little time together are enough.
Why we like Kibo Sushi House
We like Kibo because of the quality and freshness of its sushi. Freshness matters when it comes to Japanese food, and we appreciate a restaurant that takes the quality of its food seriously.
Of course, good sushi does not always come at a bargain price. Kibo is not what I would call a cheap place to eat. When we look at restaurant prices these days, we have to be a little more thoughtful about where and when we spend our money.
But there is another side to the story.
The 25% end-of-day discount
One interesting feature is the substantial end-of-day discount of 25% on eligible items.
Now, that gets my attention!
I have always believed that enjoying good food and being sensible about spending money are not mutually exclusive. We can appreciate quality without automatically paying full price every time.
A discount like this makes the idea of enjoying sushi a little more attractive. Rather than looking only at the original price, it is worth checking whether the end-of-day offer is available and which items are included.
Naturally, the exact offer and availability may vary, so it is a good idea to check with the restaurant before making plans around the discount.
For retirees and seniors living on a fixed income, little savings can add up. We may not think much about saving a few dollars on one occasion, but over weeks and months, these small decisions can make a difference.
And if the food is still good, why not?
Getting older changes how we enjoy life
When I was younger, I probably paid less attention to the small details of an ordinary day. Work, family responsibilities, meetings, and deadlines kept me busy.
Retirement has given me a different perspective.
Julie and I enjoy our regular mall walks, our coffee stops, and our simple meals. We do not need to turn every outing into a major event. Sometimes, the pleasure comes from returning to a familiar place and knowing that we can sit down, relax, and enjoy the moment.
A quiet corner outside a sushi restaurant may not sound like much. But when you have someone you love beside you, even an ordinary corner can become part of your personal story.
That is one thing I am learning as I continue my Grandpa Journey: happiness is often hiding in plain sight.
A little tip from Grandpa
If you enjoy sushi and happen to visit Kibo Sushi House at Hillcrest Mall, you might want to ask about its end-of-day discount. The food may not be the cheapest option in the mall, but a 25% saving on eligible items could make it better value.
My advice is simple: enjoy good food, look for sensible savings, and never underestimate the pleasure of a comfortable place to sit and share a little time together.
After all, life is not only about how much we spend or how far we travel. It is also about the little experiences we collect along the way.
And sometimes, Grandpa's best discoveries happen right here at the local shopping mall.
A little advertising. A little friendship. A lot of heart.
That is the Grandpa Journey way.
