👉 Why I want to leave my stories behind

A Wonderful Evening, Despite the Disappointing Dinner

There are evenings when the company is more enjoyable than the food. Last night was one of them.

Julie and I attended a dinner gathering at Kingsfield Chinese Cuisine. We had a wonderful time. There was wine, laughter, jokes, friendly conversations and plenty of catching up with our fellow seniors.

The atmosphere was warm and cheerful. Nobody seemed to be in a hurry to leave. Conversations flowed from one to another, and before long, the evening had become another memorable social occasion.

However, I must admit that the food did not quite meet my expectations.

We have had lunch at Kingsfield several times in the past. On those occasions, the portions were generous, the food was tasty, and the table service was excellent. Naturally, I expected the same standard for this dinner gathering.

I was looking forward to the quality of the meat and fish, the preparation of the dishes, the recipes and, of course, the service.

Unfortunately, the overall dining experience was a little disappointing. Perhaps my expectations were too high, based on our previous visits. I don't want to be unfair to the restaurant, but an honest account should include both the good and the not-so-good.

Fortunately, the evening offered much more than a meal.

One of the conversations I particularly enjoyed was about our forthcoming Christmas party. There will be preparations, gifts, entertainment and, naturally, karaoke singing.

Julie and I will participate in the singing. We are thinking of performing two songs, one in Chinese and another in English. We are certainly not professional singers, but that has never been the point. It is about joining in, having fun and sharing the moment with friends.

During dinner, I also took the opportunity to thank Charles, who has served as our chairman for more than a decade, and his wife for their tremendous efforts.

Charles is a quiet gentleman. He may not be the person who speaks the most, but he is full of energy and action behind the scenes. His dedication, together with his wife's contribution, has helped our group grow into what it is today.

I remember how the group started more than ten years ago. There were just a few seniors and a couple of tables at McConaghy Community Centre.

Look at us today! We now have several hundred senior members and approximately 50 tables.

That is quite a transformation. It takes commitment, patience, organization and, most importantly, people who are willing to give their time and energy to others.

We are fortunate to have Charles and his wife leading our group.

Looking back, I enjoyed the evening very much. The wine was enjoyable, the conversations were lively, and the jokes and laughter made the gathering worthwhile.

The food might not have lived up to my expectations, but friendship and companionship certainly did.

At this stage of life, I have learned that a memorable evening is not necessarily measured by the quality of the dishes on the table.

Sometimes, it is measured by the people sitting around it.

And last night, we had plenty of reasons to smile.

A little food, a little wine, a lot of friendship, and memories worth keeping.

That is another chapter in Grandpa Journey.
