AI Learning for Seniors: Week 11

Using AI to Write Memoirs or Autobiographies

Introduction 引言

English
This week, I want to share something close to the heart: writing our life stories. Many seniors, myself included, often think about recording memories for our children, grandchildren, or even just for ourselves. The challenge, however, is knowing where to begin and how to organize years of experience into meaningful words. That’s where AI comes in.

Why Seniors Should Write Memoirs

English
Writing memoirs is not about being famous or producing a bestseller. It is about reflection, sharing values, and preserving family history. When we write, we rediscover forgotten details, make sense of past struggles, and leave behind a gift of wisdom.

How AI Can Help AI

English
AI is not here to replace our voice but to guide and support us. Here are a few ways seniors can use AI:

  1. Brainstorming prompts – AI can suggest questions to trigger memories, like “What was your first job?” or “How did you meet your lifelong friends?”

  2. Organizing chapters – If you share stories in random order, AI can help group them into themes such as childhood, career, family, and travels.

  3. Polishing language – For those of us who may struggle with grammar or structure, AI can refine the writing while keeping our authentic voice.

  4. Bilingual writing – With AI, it’s easier to write in English and Chinese side-by-side, making stories accessible to more readers.

A Gentle Reminder

English
Our memories are precious. AI is just a helper, not the author. The heart of the story is always ours. Don’t worry about perfection—what matters most is honesty and authenticity.

Closing Thoughts 結語

English
Week by week, I realize that AI is more than a tool; it is a companion that helps seniors unlock creativity. Writing a memoir with AI is like having a patient listener who encourages us to share our journey. Perhaps one day, when our children read these stories, they will not only know what we did, but also understand who we are.

A Year After Brain Surgery: My Journey of Recovery and the Vital Lesson of Listening to My Body

On March 13, 2024 I was lying in St. Michael’s Hospital, undergoing surgery for a subdural hematoma—a condition I never imagined would happen to me. Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the steady recovery I’ve made, the invaluable lessons I’ve learned, and the unwavering support of my incredible wife, Julie. Her love, patience, and personal care during my darkest moments were nothing short of heroic. This story is as much about her as it is about my recovery. The Wake-Up Call: Recognizing the Signs Before my diagnosis, I experienced subtle but persistent symptoms that I initially brushed off. Fatigue, occasional headaches, and unsteady walk were easy to dismiss as stress or lack of sleep. But over time, these symptoms escalated. My walking became unsteady, my speech occasionally slurred. March 11, 2024 Julie noticed my severe headache and booked the appointment with our family doctor who  urged me to seek medical emergency attention right away. It was ...
