Day 6 – Along the Romantic Road: Medieval Magic and German Charm (03.7.1995 recollection))

Today was a feast for the senses — winding roads, timber-framed towns, rolling vineyards, and glimpses of Germany’s deep-rooted history at every turn. We left the Rhine behind and headed southeast through Bavaria’s most scenic and romantic landscapes, where each stop felt like stepping into a fairy tale.

Following the Rhine and Heading East

After a restful night in the Rhineland, we boarded our coach early in the morning, enjoying a beautiful drive along the River Rhine. The scenic route hugged the riverbank, with vineyards climbing steep hills, castle ruins perched above the cliffs, and quaint river towns with half-timbered houses appearing one after another. It’s no wonder this area inspired poets and painters — even from the window of the coach, the view was spectacular.

We soon passed Frankfurt, Germany’s financial capital, its skyline of modern glass towers in sharp contrast to the traditional villages we had just seen. It felt like the meeting point of old Europe and the new.

By midday, we entered the famous Romantic Road, a historic route that links some of southern Germany’s most beautiful medieval towns. Our journey took us through Bad Mergentheim, a spa town known for its mineral springs, and then to Weikersheim, home to a Renaissance palace with lush gardens and a grand courtyard.

These small towns felt untouched by time. The cobbled streets, flower boxes on every windowsill, and ornate signs above shops gave them a warm and welcoming charm. We had a chance to stop and stroll through the main squares, admire local crafts, and sample some traditional German snacks — like pretzels and apple strudel fresh from the oven.

Arrival in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

One of the day’s highlights was Rothenburg ob der Tauber, perhaps the most well-preserved medieval town in Germany. Surrounded by ancient walls and towers, this town is a true jewel. As we walked through the archways, it felt like entering a living museum — except here, people still lived, worked, and celebrated life as they have for centuries.

We wandered the narrow streets lined with colorful half-timbered houses, passed through bustling market squares, and visited artisan shops that sold everything from handcrafted toys to Christmas ornaments — even though it was spring!

The town’s Plönlein (Little Square), with its crooked house and forked street framed by stone towers, was simply magical. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Germany, and now I understand why.

Evening in Regensburg

After a full afternoon of exploration, we continued eastward to Regensburg, where we would spend the night. Located on the Danube River, Regensburg is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a history stretching back to Roman times.

By the time we arrived, the sky was painted with hues of pink and gold — the perfect backdrop for our arrival. After checking into our hotel, some of us took a short walk to stretch our legs and admire the old stone bridges and lively evening café culture.

Dinner was relaxed and satisfying — warm dishes, hearty German flavors, and good company. As I drifted off to sleep tonight, I felt truly content — today had been a rich blend of history, beauty, and the joy of discovery.

Coming Up: Day 7 – Through the Austrian Alps to Vienna

Tomorrow we leave Germany and head south into Austria, passing through the stunning Alpine landscapes as we make our way to the musical city of Vienna.

A Year After Brain Surgery: My Journey of Recovery and the Vital Lesson of Listening to My Body

On March 13, 2024 I was lying in St. Michael’s Hospital, undergoing surgery for a subdural hematoma—a condition I never imagined would happen to me. Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the steady recovery I’ve made, the invaluable lessons I’ve learned, and the unwavering support of my incredible wife, Julie.
