Day 3 – A Royal Encounter with London’s Landmarks (30.06.1995 recollection)

Today was the kind of day that lives in postcards and travel dreams — a deep dive into the heart of historic London, full of iconic landmarks, royal tales, and a refreshing cruise on the River Thames. It was the perfect way to begin the more active part of our journey.

A Guided Tour of London’s Highlights

After breakfast, we boarded our coach for a guided city tour of London. Our local guide was a knowledgeable and witty Brit who shared both facts and fun anecdotes that brought the city’s grand past to life.

Our first stop was the Tower of London, an imposing fortress that has stood for nearly 1,000 years. Its thick stone walls seemed to echo with stories — of kings and queens, crown jewels and prisoners, beheadings and betrayals. We marveled at the Crown Jewels, glittering under display lights, and took photos with the iconic Yeoman Warders (better known as Beefeaters) standing guard.

From there, we passed by St. Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, and Big Ben, whose majestic clock face peeked out through the clouds. The Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace was another unforgettable highlight. Though we stood among a crowd of visitors, there was a quiet reverence as the guards marched in precise formation, their red uniforms and bearskin hats a vivid contrast to the grey London sky.

A Visit to Windsor Castle

In the afternoon, we left central London for a side trip to Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the British monarchy. Set on a hill overlooking the Thames, the castle was breathtaking — its towers, flag-flying turrets, and beautifully kept grounds exuded centuries of royal heritage.

We toured the State Apartments, adorned with magnificent tapestries, paintings, and antique furnishings. The grandeur was almost overwhelming. In St. George’s Chapel, we saw the resting place of Queen Elizabeth II and other monarchs — a quiet, sacred space filled with history and grace.

Cruising the River Thames

To round out the day, we returned to London for a boat tour along the River Thames. Gliding beneath bridges — including the majestic Tower Bridge — and passing by landmarks like the Shakespeare’s Globe, and the modern skyscrapers of the City, the cruise offered a peaceful yet panoramic view of London from the water.

The air was cool, the breeze gentle, and the views unforgettable. As the sun began to set, the lights of London twinkled to life, and I felt completely immersed in the moment — surrounded by history, beauty, and a sense of wonder.

Reflections

London is a city that respects its past while embracing the present. Today’s journey through castles and cathedrals, towers and thrones, reminded me of the incredible stories that cities can tell — if we’re willing to listen.

Coming Up: Day 4 – Crossing the Channel to Belgium

Tomorrow, we bid farewell to London and travel through the countryside to board the ferry for the European continent. First stop: Brussels, Belgium!
