A Memorable Journey to Hong Kong: Rediscovering the Past and Embracing the Present (DeepSeek assisted)

In the early days of January 2025, I embarked on a journey that would take me back to one of my favorite cities in the world—Hong Kong. The trip began on January 5, 2025, as I boarded a Cathay Pacific flight from Pearson International Airport Toronto, filled with anticipation and excitement. Hong Kong  has always held a special place in my heart, and this visit was no exception. Over the course of three weeks, I immersed myself in the vibrant culture, revisited cherished memories, and created new ones.

Settling In: Cityview YMCA and Regal Oriental Hotel

My adventure started with a week-long stay at the Cityview YMCA Hotel, a comfortable and convenient base in Mongkok the heart of Kowloon. The hotel’s central location made it easy to explore the city, and the warm hospitality made me feel right at home. After a week, I moved to the Regal Oriental Hotel Kowloon City, where I spent the next two weeks. The Regal Oriental’s elegant ambiance and stunning views of the city skyline added a touch of luxury to my trip.

During my stay, I attended to several important administrative tasks, including applying for a Return to Country Permit and renewing my Hong Kong ID card. I’m grateful to Michael and David for accompanying me on these errands, as their presence made the process more enjoyable. Friends and siblings companionship served as a heartfelt reminder of my deep-rooted connection to this vibrant and bustling metropolis.

Rediscovering Hong Kong’s Charm

Hong Kong is a city that never fails to captivate, and this trip was no different. I spent my days revisiting old haunts and exploring new corners of the city. Tsim Sha Tsui, with its bustling streets and stunning harbor views, was a delight to wander through. I strolled along the promenade, taking in the iconic skyline of Victoria Harbour, and indulged in some retail therapy at the famous Ladies’ Market on Tung Choi Street (commonly known as “Women Street”). The market was alive with the festive spirit of Chinese New Year, and I couldn’t resist picking up some new clothing to celebrate the occasion.

In Sham Shui Po, Pei Ho Street Market and Cooked Food Centre, I marveled at the district’s vibrant street markets and electronic shops, while Kowloon City offered a glimpse into the city’s rich history and culinary diversity. One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Kai Tak Sports Park, a modern marvel built on the site of the former Kai Tak Airport. The park’s state-of-the-art facilities and lively atmosphere were a testament to Hong Kong’s ability to blend the old with the new.

A Culinary Adventure

No trip to Hong Kong would be complete without indulging in its world-renowned cuisine. I made it a point to sample a variety of dishes, from traditional 新肥泉海鮮大排檔  to international flavors. At the Peninsular Hotel Chinese cuisine- 嘉麟樓 in Tsim Sha Tsui.

I savored fresh authentic northern Chinese dishes that were as visually stunning as they were delicious in Zither Garden Wanchai as well as Tien Yi Chinese Restaurant, Admiral Plaza.

In Kowloon City 九龍城好彩海鮮酒家 Ho Choi Seafood Restaurant and 嘉豐點心專門店 served up mouthwatering delicacies that left me craving more.

One of the most memorable meals was the traditional Chiuchow beef noodles at a humble eatery in Mong Kok Nathen Road. The rich, flavorful broth and tender beef were a perfect comfort food after a day of exploring. I also enjoyed daily breakfasts near the Cityview YMCA Hotel, where the spread of congee, dim sum, and fresh fruit was a delightful way to start each day within walking distance.

Speaking of dim sum, I stumbled upon a hidden gem near Soy Street/Waterloo Road in Mong Kok. 喜聚火鍋雞煲專門店 . In the morning this small, unassuming restaurant served some of the best dim sum I’ve ever tasted—steamed dumplings, fluffy barbecue pork buns, and crispy spring rolls, all at incredibly affordable prices. In the evening, it serves hotpot only and a bit pricy. It was a reminder that some of the best culinary experiences in Hong Kong can be found in the most unexpected places.

Celebrating Chinese New Year

My trip coincided with the Chinese New Year festivities, and Hong Kong was alive with energy and excitement. The streets were adorned with red lanterns and decorations, and the air was filled with the sounds of firecrackers and traditional music. I joined the locals in celebrating the Year of the Snake, enjoying the festive atmosphere and the sense of community that permeated the city.

Reflections on a Journey Well-Traveled

As my trip came to an end on February 10, 2025, I reflected on the incredible experiences I had during my three weeks in Hong Kong. From the bustling streets of Tsim Sha Tsui to the serene beauty of Kai Tak Sports Park, every moment was a reminder of why I love this city so much. The food, the culture, and the people all came together to create a journey that was both nostalgic and refreshing.

Hong Kong is a city that constantly evolves, yet it retains its unique charm and character. This trip allowed me to reconnect with old memories while creating new ones, and I left with a heart full of gratitude and a promise to return soon. Until next time, Hong Kong—thank you for the unforgettable adventure.
