A Little Visual Time Travel
By David Au
They say a picture is worth a thousand words… but what about four pictures spanning decades?
Recently, I stumbled across a fascinating experiment — turning one photo into a small journey through time. Starting from 75 (2020), I wanted to see what I might have looked like at 80, 90… and what I might look like at 100.
Using AI portrait aging (and a little digital magic), I now have three versions of myself:
-
80 years old — my real, present-day self. This is the me my friends, family, and readers know today. A little more silver in the hair, a little more wisdom in the gaze.
-
90 years old — the lines deepen, the skin softens, but the spark remains. Life has written a few more stories on my face, but there’s still mischief in the eyes.
-
100 years old — a century’s worth of living in a single frame. The face of someone who has seen the world change in ways unimaginable, yet still carries a gentle smile.
Looking at these portraits side-by-side is humbling. We don’t get to actually “see” ourselves change over the decades — usually, the process is slow and invisible until we suddenly find an old photo. This little project gave me a rare chance to pause time, skip backward, and then leap forward.
It’s not just vanity — it’s reflection. It’s curiosity. It’s a reminder that aging is not just about wrinkles and white hair; it’s about accumulating stories, experiences, and depth.
If you ever get the chance, try this for yourself. You might discover, as I did, that no matter the age, your eyes still carry the same soul.
