Day 15 – Lucerne: Jewel of the Swiss Alps (12.7.1995 recollection)

Today we immersed ourselves in the charms of Lucerne, one of the most picturesque and beloved cities in all of Switzerland. Nestled between towering snow-capped mountains and the tranquil waters of Lake Lucerne, the city effortlessly blends medieval charm with alpine elegance.

Our sightseeing tour began with a visit to Lucerne’s iconic city walls, part of the ancient fortifications that once guarded this proud city. We then admired the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) — a beautiful covered wooden bridge adorned with 17th-century paintings, spanning the River Reuss. Nearby stood the Water Tower, an emblem of the city, and the surrounding ornate patrician houses with frescoed facades and flower-filled balconies lining the cobbled streets.

We paused at the deeply moving Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal), a masterful stone sculpture carved into a sandstone cliff. It honors the heroic Swiss Guards who died defending King Louis XVI during the French Revolution. The mournful expression on the lion’s face left a lasting impression on all of us.

The rest of the day was filled with a variety of optional excursions and activities to suit every traveler’s spirit:

  • A cable car ride up Mount Titlis, reaching altitudes over 10,000 feet, offering a spectacular view of the Alps and the sensation of walking above the clouds.

  • A relaxing cruise on the fjord-like Lake Lucerne, taking in the peaceful waters, green hillsides, and distant peaks.

  • And of course, a chance to indulge in Swiss shopping, especially for fine Swiss watches, chocolates, and handmade crafts.

Lucerne captivated us with its timeless beauty and its gentle pace. As the sun set behind the mountains, we reflected on how lucky we were to witness such natural and cultural richness all in one place.
