Day 11 – From Venice to Rome: A Journey Through the Heart of Italy (08.7.1995 recollection)

                                  Rome 1995

We began our journey early this morning, leaving behind the romantic waterways and timeless charm of the Venice region. As our coach headed south toward Rome, we found ourselves traversing a rich and varied tapestry of Italian landscapes, each unfolding like pages of a storybook filled with natural splendor, cultural depth, and historical grandeur.

Our route first took us through the fertile plains of the Po River Delta, often referred to as the breadbasket of Italy. This vast agricultural region, nourished by the life-giving waters of the Po River, stretched out before us in a patchwork of golden fields, green vineyards, and orderly rows of crops. Tractors moved slowly across the land, and rustic farmhouses dotted the countryside, giving us a glimpse into the rhythm of rural life that has sustained Italy for centuries.

As we continued on, the terrain gradually transformed. The flatlands gave way to the rugged Apennine Mountains, which rise like a backbone through the center of the Italian peninsula. The winding road carried us up and around forested slopes and rocky ridges, revealing panoramic vistas that seemed to go on forever. Nestled within these hills were countless picturesque villages, their terracotta roofs and stone facades blending harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. These settlements, clinging to the hillsides, appeared almost suspended in time — quiet, proud witnesses to the history and traditions that define Italy’s rural heart.

Around midday, we arrived in the beautiful hilltop city of Perugia, perched about 1,000 feet above the Tiber Valley. This city, a hidden gem in central Italy, immediately captured our imagination. Steeped in history and culture, Perugia is known for its medieval architecture, Renaissance art, and a vibrantly youthful spirit, thanks to its prestigious university that draws students from around the world. We strolled through narrow cobblestone alleys and under ancient archways, marveling at how the town seemed to blend the old and the new with effortless elegance.

The town’s artistic legacy was evident at every turn — from centuries-old frescoes and carved stone portals to modern art galleries tucked into historic buildings. As we explored, the scent of freshly brewed espresso and melted chocolate wafted through the air. Perugia, after all, is not only a cultural haven but also the home of the world-renowned Perugina chocolates and the Eurochocolate Festival, making it a sweet stop in every sense of the word.

Reluctantly bidding farewell to this enchanting city, we resumed our journey southward. The afternoon light bathed the countryside in a warm golden hue as we approached our final destination — Rome, the Eternal City.

We arrived in the evening, just as the city began to glow under the soft lights of twilight. Even from the coach window, Rome’s grandeur was unmistakable — from majestic domes and classical columns to the energy and bustle of modern life coexisting with ancient ruins. As we checked into our hotel, the air buzzed with anticipation. Tomorrow, we would delve into the layers of this legendary city — a place where emperors once ruled, where saints walked, and where history is not just remembered, but lived every day.Our journey today was more than just a passage from one city to another. It was a moving portrait of Italy itself — a country where landscapes, history, and humanity come together in harmony. We went to bed inspired, knowing that tomorrow, the wonders of Rome awaited.

A Year After Brain Surgery: My Journey of Recovery and the Vital Lesson of Listening to My Body

On March 13, 2024 I was lying in St. Michael’s Hospital, undergoing surgery for a subdural hematoma—a condition I never imagined would happen to me. Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the steady recovery I’ve made, the invaluable lessons I’ve learned, and the unwavering support of my incredible wife, Julie. Her love, patience, and personal care during my darkest moments were nothing short of heroic. This story is as much about her as it is about my recovery. The Wake-Up Call: Recognizing the Signs Before my diagnosis, I experienced subtle but persistent symptoms that I initially brushed off.
