A Light Supper and a Sweet Surprise: Finding Joy in Simple, Healthy Eating

A Light Supper, a Sweet Orange, and a Small Lesson in Everyday Joy

Tonight’s dinner was simple, light, and quietly satisfying — the kind of meal that doesn’t try to impress but leaves you feeling content and grateful.

Julie made her favorite char siu, about 2 lb of half lean pork gently seasoned with just the right balance of soy, sweet BBQ sauces, garlic powder, white pepper powder and tiny bits of spices. Alongside it, she prepared a bowl of quinoa mixed with diced tomatoes, choppd red onion, corn, celery dices, and carrot slices. Nothing heavy, nothing fancy — just clean flavors and thoughtful cooking for healthy eating. Over the years, we’ve naturally learned to eat less for supper, and we both feel better for it. A lighter evening meal seems kinder to the body, especially as we grow older.

After dinner, we shared an orange.

At first glance, it was just an orange — until we peeled it.

The moment the skin came off, the segments glistened with juice. One bite surprised us both. It was exceptionally juicy, fresh, and sweet, far better than we expected. There was a tiny sticker on it: Sunwest 3701 Australia. That small label suddenly felt important, almost like a name tag for an unexpected guest who turned out to be delightful.

What made the surprise even sweeter was the price — only $0.88 per pound. In a time when grocery bills seem to rise quietly every week, finding something this good and this affordable felt like a small win.

It made me pause and think.

Happiness doesn’t always come from big plans or special occasions. Sometimes, it shows up as a light supper shared at home, or a surprisingly good orange eaten at the kitchen table. These are the moments that don’t make headlines, but they make up a life.

I’ll definitely look for that Sunwest 3701 sticker again, and I’ll gladly recommend it to friends who enjoy fruit. Not because it’s exotic or expensive, but because it reminded me how simple pleasures still have the power to surprise us.

Another quiet evening, another small memory added to the Grandpa Journey — and for that, I’m thankful.
