Day 9 – Vienna to Salzburg: Through the Heart of Austria (06.7.1995)

                                            Vienna - Salzburg 1995

Today we journeyed westward, leaving Vienna behind and heading into the Austrian countryside. Our route took us through picturesque valleys, alpine meadows, and small villages nestled among rolling green hills.

Leaving the elegant cityscape of Vienna behind, our coach journey to Salzburg unfolded like pages from a storybook. As we traveled westward, the landscape gradually transformed—rolling hills gave way to wide, open meadows, where quaint villages nestled amid clusters of trees and church steeples pierced the sky like timeless sentinels. Snow-dusted peaks loomed in the distance, their jagged silhouettes softened by the morning mist. The scenery was nothing short of enchanting—verdant pastures, serene alpine lakes, and charming farmhouses dotted the route like brushstrokes on a canvas. At times, it felt as though we were driving straight through a fairy tale. The closer we got to Salzburg, the more dramatic the landscape became, with the majestic Alps forming a breathtaking backdrop. Every turn of the road revealed a new postcard-perfect view, making the journey itself as memorable as the destination.

By midday, we arrived in Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the city of The Sound of Music. It was like stepping into a storybook — charming squares, onion-domed churches, and pastel-colored townhouses lined the narrow streets.

Our walking tour began at Mirabell Gardens, famous for its manicured flowerbeds and “Do-Re-Mi” steps from the beloved film. Crossing the Salzach River, we entered the Old Town (Altstadt) and explored treasures such as:

  • Mozart’s Birthplace

  • The Salzburg Cathedral

  • The baroque Residenzplatz

  • Quaint Getreidegasse, a historic shopping street full of iron-wrought signs and traditional shops

Above it all towered the Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of Europe’s largest medieval castles, perched on a hill and offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding Alps.

In the evening, we savored Austrian specialties like Wiener Schnitzel, apple strudel, and maybe even a sip of local beer or Austrian wine, enjoying the festive yet cozy ambiance of this musical city.
