Homeward Bound: Reflections on a Long Journey and a Welcome Rest

It was time to bid farewell to Singapore and begin the journey back to Toronto, Canada. My trip home was a mix of excitement, exhaustion, and a touch of illness, but it was all part of the adventure. Here’s how it unfolded.

Leaving Singapore: A Bittersweet Goodbye

My journey home began at Changi Airport T4, one of the most beautiful and efficient airports in the world. After checking in for my Cathay Pacific flight, I took some time to explore the airport’s stunning attractions, like the Jewel’s indoor waterfall and the lush greenery that makes Changi feel more like a garden than a transportation hub. It was a fitting farewell to Singapore, a city that had captivated me with its blend of tradition and modernity.

The flight to Hong Kong was smooth and comfortable. Cathay Pacific’s impeccable service made the journey enjoyable, and I spent most of the flight reflecting on the incredible experiences I’d had over the past months. From the bustling streets of Hong Kong to the serene beauty of Zhongshan and the futuristic marvels of Singapore, it had been a trip of a lifetime.

Transit in Hong Kong: A Familiar Stopover

Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok Airport was as bustling as ever during my transit. I had a few hours to spare, so I wandered through the terminal, enjoying a quick meal of dim sum and picking up some last-minute souvenirs. Hong Kong had been a significant part of my journey, and it felt fitting to pass through this vibrant city one last time before heading home.

The Long Flight to Toronto: A Test of Endurance

The second leg of my journey—the long flight from Hong Kong to Toronto Pearson International Airport—was where things got challenging. About halfway through the flight, I started feeling unwell. The symptoms hit me hard: chills, and an overwhelming sense of tiredness. It was clear I had caught the flu, likely from the close quarters of the plane or the changing climates I’d experienced during my travels.

Home Sweet Home: Recovery and Reflection

Stepping into my house was a moment of pure relief. The familiar sights, sounds, and smells of home were a balm to my weary soul. However, the flu had taken its toll, and I knew I needed to prioritize my health.

I consulted my trusted family doctor, who confirmed that it was indeed the flu but assured me that my lungs were fine and there was no cause for serious concern. The prescription? Plenty of rest, fluids, and time to recover. I followed the doctor’s advice to the letter, abstaining from my usual activities like table tennis and focusing on getting better.

For two weeks, I embraced a slower pace of life. I spent most of my time resting in bed, catching up on books and movies, and reflecting on my incredible journey. While it was frustrating to be sidelined by illness, it also gave me a chance to process everything I’d experienced and appreciate the memories I made.

Final Thoughts: A Journey to Remember

Looking back, my two-month adventure was everything I’d hoped for and more. From the vibrant streets of Hong Kong to the tranquil beauty of Zhongshan and the futuristic wonders of Singapore, every destination had left its mark on me. The people I met, the food I tasted, and the sights I saw had enriched my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Even the flu, as unpleasant as it was, became part of the story—a reminder that travel, while rewarding, can also be demanding. It taught me the importance of listening to my body and taking time to rest and recover.

Now, as I’m finally back to full health and resuming my daily routines, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to explore new places, for the kindness of strangers along the way, and for the comfort of returning home to loved ones.

Travel is not just about the destinations; it’s about the journey—the highs, the lows, and everything in between. And this journey, flu and all, was one I’ll cherish forever.

Tips for Travelers:

  • Prepare for Long Flights: Stay hydrated, move around periodically, and pack essentials like a neck pillow and warm clothing.
  • Listen to Your Body: If you feel unwell during or after a trip, seek medical advice and prioritize rest.
  • Embrace the Journey: Travel is full of surprises—both good and bad. Embrace them all as part of the adventure.
