Why Do People Experience a “Cliff-Like Decline” After Age 75?

Why Do People Experience a “Cliff-Like Decline” After Age 75?

Yesterday, I came across a YouTube video discussing why many people experience a sharp decline in health and abilities after turning 75. It struck me as a meaningful topic, especially for our age group, so I’d like to share my thoughts with you.

Why does this happen?

  1. Biological limits – Our cells lose their ability to repair themselves effectively, and after 70, this decline speeds up.

  2. Accumulation of chronic diseases – Conditions like hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease often show their strongest impact around this age.

  3. Muscle and balance loss – Muscle mass decreases steadily with age, but by 75, walking stability and balance issues become very noticeable.

  4. Brain aging – Slower nerve transmission affects memory, reaction time, and even increases dementia risks.

  5. Social and psychological factors – Retirement, loss of a partner, and loneliness can accelerate both physical and mental decline.

What can we do?

  • Exercise regularly – Walking, swimming, and light strength training can preserve muscle and balance.

  • Eat wisely – Reduce salt and sugar, get enough protein, calcium, and vitamin D.

  • Keep the brain active – Reading, writing, playing chess or mahjong, or learning something new helps.

  • Stay socially engaged – Friend gatherings and community activities bring joy and energy.

  • Go for check-ups – Detecting problems early makes decline less dramatic.

Reflection

The video described 75 as a “turning point in life.” I agree, but I don’t see it as an unavoidable cliff. With preparation and healthy habits, we can turn what looks like a steep fall into a gentle slope, living with dignity, health, and joy.

Canadian Senior Drivers BE READY! Major Driving License Updates

A Year After Brain Surgery: My Journey of Recovery and the Vital Lesson of Listening to My Body

On March 13, 2024 I was lying in St. Michael’s Hospital, undergoing surgery for a subdural hematoma—a condition I never imagined would happen to me. Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the steady recovery I’ve made, the invaluable lessons I’ve learned, and the unwavering support of my incredible wife, Julie. Her love, patience, and personal care during my darkest moments were nothing short of heroic. This story is as much about her as it is about my recovery. The Wake-Up Call: Recognizing the Signs Before my diagnosis, I experienced subtle but persistent symptoms that I initially brushed off. Fatigue, occasional headaches, and unsteady walk were easy to dismiss as stress or lack of sleep. But over time, these symptoms escalated. My walking became unsteady, my speech occasionally slurred. March 11, 2024 Julie noticed my severe headache and booked the appointment with our family doctor who  urged me to seek medical emergency attention right away. It was ...
