From Struggles to Smiles — A Journey Through Changing Times

From Struggles to Smiles - A heartfelt reflection for old friends and readers

"We had little, but we had hope. And with that, we built everything."

Hong Kong in the 1950s  — bustling street with rickshaws and street vendors.

Modern-day Hongkong skyline - progress, and time.

As I sit back and reflect on the past decades, I often think of the years following the end of World War II. Life back then — especially in Hong Kong and China — was undeniably rough. Many of us still remember those early days. People were focused purely on survival. There wasn’t much luxury or comfort, just the daily grind of making ends meet.

We worked long hours — six, sometimes seven days a week — with no such thing as a weekend or holiday. Everything was manual: our hands and feet were our tools, our strength and determination our only assets. It was hard living, but strangely enough, people were content. Why? Because there was peace. After the trauma of war, that alone meant everything. And more than that — there was hope. People believed in a better tomorrow. We worked not just for today, but for a future we could imagine, even if we couldn't yet see it.

Through those hard years, we built something. Brick by brick, sweat by sweat. And when the 1970s came along, we began to see the rewards of that effort. New machinery, better infrastructure, and a wave of invention and progress transformed daily life. Factories became more efficient, cities more vibrant, homes more comfortable. And with those changes, our lives truly improved. You could see it in people’s faces — the pride, the joy, the genuine smiles.

We weren’t wealthy by today’s standards, but we were fulfilled. Life had purpose, and the future looked bright.

Now, as we look around today, it's clear we’ve come a long way. Materially, people are better off than ever. There are more opportunities, better healthcare, faster communication, and conveniences we once could only dream of. But oddly enough, something seems missing.

Despite all the advancements, people today appear more anxious, more restless, and often, more disappointed. The sense of direction, that unshakable hope that once guided us, feels dimmer. Many are overwhelmed, uncertain, even fearful about the future — not just for themselves, but for their children and grandchildren. We are more connected than ever online, yet more disconnected in spirit.

I sometimes wonder — have we moved forward, only to leave something behind?

Maybe it’s time for all of us, especially those of us who lived through those earlier days, to share not just our memories, but our values. Gratitude. Resilience. Hard work. Community. Faith in the future. These are timeless strengths. They carried us through poverty and hardship — and perhaps they are exactly what we need to carry us through modern uncertainty.

So to my dear old friends, and to you — my cherished readers — I say this: Let us continue to treasure what really matters. Let us remind each other of where we came from, how far we’ve come, and why we must still look ahead with hope.

Because even in uncertain times, a brighter future is still worth working for.

Warmest regards,
David AU

Canadian Senior Drivers BE READY! Major Driving License Updates

A Year After Brain Surgery: My Journey of Recovery and the Vital Lesson of Listening to My Body

On March 13, 2024 I was lying in St. Michael’s Hospital, undergoing surgery for a subdural hematoma—a condition I never imagined would happen to me. Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the steady recovery I’ve made, the invaluable lessons I’ve learned, and the unwavering support of my incredible wife, Julie. Her love, patience, and personal care during my darkest moments were nothing short of heroic. This story is as much about her as it is about my recovery. The Wake-Up Call: Recognizing the Signs Before my diagnosis, I experienced subtle but persistent symptoms that I initially brushed off. Fatigue, occasional headaches, and unsteady walk were easy to dismiss as stress or lack of sleep. But over time, these symptoms escalated. My walking became unsteady, my speech occasionally slurred. March 11, 2024 Julie noticed my severe headache and booked the appointment with our family doctor who  urged me to seek medical emergency attention right away. It was ...
