Time Horizon: A Reflection Over 50 Years

David

Time Horizon: A Reflection Over 50 Years

By David

Fifty years ago, when I was around thirty — young, curious, and full of energy — I made one of my early trips to China. My destination was Guangdong, particularly the great southern city once known as Kwong Chow (Guangzhou). It was famous for its fine Cantonese cuisine — delicate dim sum, flavorful roast meats, and soups brewed to perfection. To a traveler like me at that age, it was both an adventure and a discovery.

But what I saw back then is a world so different from what I see today. The streets were teeming with people and bicycles, an endless flow of motion that somehow had its own rhythm. Bicycles, hand-pulled carts, and the occasional bus or truck made up the city’s transport scene. People wore mostly grey or dark blue outfits, following the simple and uniform “Zhongshan” style. It reflected the time — practical, collective, and modest.

There were hardly any private cars. The roads were uneven and narrow, lined with old, worn-out buildings whose walls told silent stories of history and struggle. Life seemed tough but real — grounded in simplicity and community spirit. Yet even in that setting, I could feel a certain warmth in people’s eyes and hear the familiar Cantonese tones that reminded me of shared roots and enduring resilience.

Fast forward to today — half a century later — my recent visit left me stunned and amazed. The transformation of Guangzhou is nothing short of breathtaking. The same city that once relied on bicycles and carts is now filled with skyscrapers, highways, metro lines, and gleaming towers of glass and steel. The skyline sparkles at night like a futuristic cityscape. Wide boulevards replace narrow lanes, and modern shopping malls stand where old shops once stood. The people’s attire, too, has changed — colorful, diverse, and stylish — reflecting confidence and global influence.

The contrast between past and present is like watching a movie that jumps fifty years ahead in time. What was once a developing urban center is now a vibrant international hub of trade, technology, and culture. The change is not only physical but also psychological — a reflection of how China’s reform and opening up reshaped lives and landscapes.

Standing there, gazing at the city lights, I couldn’t help but think about the time horizon — how much can change within a single lifetime. Half a century may seem long, but it passes in a blink when viewed through memory. The bicycles, the carts, the grey clothes — they now belong to another era, a chapter of living history. Yet, in my heart, those old streets and humble faces remain vivid and unforgettable.

Time, indeed, is the greatest storyteller.
